As for the pattern maker industry, there seem to plenty of pattern maker jobs here in Sydney but they expect you to be able to design swimwear!

Right on both accounts Boss!!
Barker machines with the cursive logo are early, whereas square bold Barker letters are of course a later machine.
The difference in the machine styles is that the build on pattern-makers' equipment are usually very refined for the accuracy in their use.
I think the differences are shown quite well here in this US Grinding and Polishing Machinery catalog below, the first three machines are traditionally grinding/sanding machines like the one you have shown, used for both timber and metal, the last two pic's show a large pattern-maker's disc sander, a very different machine to the others before.

Hi Matty,
The much sought after double grinder!
Ah very tempting but they take up a lot of space but then you've got heaps in that big workshop!
Sorry i can't help you with the address for that one in QLD. That was a Barker but he wanted silly money so I didn't touch it especially with the freight from there. I'll have another look but I'm pretty sure I lost the details.
Did you notice that in the last pic of the pattern maker series you posted that it's the spindle that is tilted not the table?
A different approach.
Have fun,
Alli

Yes, I'd certainly like to get hold one of those huge 30" disc sanders with the bobbin sander on the other side, Matty. I'd be happy to let go of the old Barker twin-disc in exchange for one of them. I notice in previous images I've seen that the Barker machines were also fitted with those big ball-shaped counter-weights on the tables. Maybe these were an optional extra? The wheels on mine continue to spin for 3-4 minutes after it's switched off - beautifully balanced. One of the bearing is getting a little bit growly so it will probably be even better once the bearings have been serviced/replaced.

Nice one EJ .
LOL, what are you doing looking at machinery ?
It looks pretty complete .
Any one know if the large bobbin is original , it looks different that the others. the cast collar for the 75mm bobbin is gone by the looks , but the mitre guage is there , that's a bonus.
Anything else missing ?
A real pity about the paint , I wonder if some of these machinery dealers are using two pack yet ?
Its probably a nightmare to get off !! if it is .
Does sand blasting do ok on two pack ?

Shame about the paint job.
They even sprayed the cable.

The large bobbin looks complete the 2 smaller appear to have the top and bottom caps missing.
The tape looks a bit suss also on them.
The large collar is fitted on the machine is it not.
The extra wooden one may be for use with the table tilted.
There is a bobbin up at the moment in Sydney and it has dodgy looking wooden bobbins.

One like that went for $500 at an auction a year or so ago in Sydney, the guy who bought it had no idea how big it was but was smart enough to know what sort of a bargain he'd got. I was chasing something else and figured it would get the last minute mad rush but it didn't. When I checked back I could've kicked myself but there were lots of crazy prices at that auction. A WX pattern mill for $200!
That paint job is obnoxious on such a nice machine.
The one up for auction in Sydney at the moment will need a paint job as well but it's a lot cheaper, an Italian one.
There was a smaller double disc, 620mm, that went for around $700. Maybe Matty decided smaller but available was better?
Jack has a thread on a UK site about making your own wooden bobbins. Looks like it works, he usually doesn't mess about.

Found a Wadkin 30" Disc/Bobbin Sander
Ended up seeing one advertised in Cairns and negotiated to buy it at a fair price, including a blower unit for dust extraction. Am still organising transport down to Gosford. These things apparently weigh-in at just under a tonne so its a substantial freighting project. Be a while until the shed is built and I can set everything up, but that's OK.

Good score !
That's a line shaft machine that's been converted isn't it?
I have a spare Al guard for the disc and a few spare discs and glue up clamp if your interested.
I still have about 20 feet of line shaft in my main shop but have moved the dusty stuff into a small annex.
If I didn't have so many cars and metal machinery in the shed I'd probably have chased this myself.
Be interested to have a decko at it when you get it to Gosford.
