Shh.It followed me home.
what can I say, it followed me home. Who else could appreciate this but you guys. And my electrician - that guy is going to love me some more.
I need another project like i need a hole in the head but apart from the soft start shes supposed to be a goer. And shes rigged so the trewalla gauge can be either a righty or a lefty. And she came with a couple saws. And the trolleys and lines. Four bolts and the hardwire and she should be ready to roll.
The secret to this one is going to be rapid installation because once it's wired in project status is over. Otherwise I can see sandblasting and painting and bearings and fairing of the benchtop and... and... and... and...
I'd call this a classic piece of Australian "woodworking" equipment. The Smellie Co went broke during the great depression, though the (now heritage listed) buildings are still there in BrisVegas. So shes at least 90 years old, maybe more. And was working up until a couple of years back. Close inspection reveals she was rigged for a line shaft originally, then it looks as though shes had a stationary motor, then the electric motor.
The friction drive has a gearbox (automotive?) fitted... looks like we have 3 forward and 1 reverse to play with.
Vintage sawmilling equipment- just like vintage woodworking equipment but the toys require cranes to shift them.
NB: Can someone tell me how to right pictures here. Everytime I upload from the phone y'all have to stand on your heads, and the phone thinks they're the right way up so wont let me roll them.

CAme with a 30" and a 36"... looks like clearance is available to run a bit more, maybe a 42". Be a bit underpowered for more then the 36" though based on the 5HP per inch rule of thumb.

Nice one
As for the pics etc, are you using an iPhone? If so, keep the home button to the left.
And what motor and g/box are you running in the Acco? 210 Perkins?Cheers

1850D with the 180 phaser and Eton number 5. Its not horsepower she needs, its an engine brake and axles...

Yanno what they say in this game - it cant sag in the middle if its chained up to the logs. She's a tough old bitch I'll give her that.
All she needs is another 300 HP,15 speed, 44000lb on 6 rod, turntable, jake brake, air, and another foot of width on the bunk and she'd actually be a truck.

Mines an 1850E, used to have the 210 and 5 speed in it, now running a Cummins 240 and 10 speed crash box, goes really well now.

Good find. Glad to see I'm not the only who can't help but save "ancient junk" - that's built to last. Smellie is a very old Scottish name, can't beat Scottish engineers. The Great Depression broke a lot of good companies producing superb products.

Thing I like most about this one is its a history lesson... its still got the pivot points for the lineshaft power lever, and bolts to fit a stationary motor, and then the electric has been added. Theres old gauge mounts, and then the trewalla has been fitted at some point. Same with the friction drive... I suspect its an add on. Part of me says keep evolving her... fit a nice little PLC over hydraulic sizing control and whack her into a roundabout and she'd still be competitive for another 30 years.

ahhh. that.
16.4 GVM. Skidders legal but a bad load: the oscillation makes her lean into the bends real hard. Bush work only and dead slow.
Hardwood is legal or very close to. Thats my milk run, and I tell ya legal or not having that pushing that old doll down a range aint ever much fun.
The overhanging maple is ridiculous, even dunnaged out so there was no weight behind the rear axle with the chains secured and with all me oversize gear. I knew it when I loaded it, and I shake me head every time I run across that picture. Oddly enough not overweight tho...
I need a bigger truck... an old R model or a W or similar. Not enough volume to justify new gear and the places I go all you want is some simple old banger that was built tough. Banks and finance companies wont touch the gear that actually makes sense because of the age, no haulage contractor wants to do the bush work, etc etc etc. I'm working on it, but sometimes that means doing things i dont like: as we both know theres a difference sometimes between illegal and dangerous and I might push one but I stay away from the other. "New" truck has to be paid for with timber sold out of logs that came home on the old one. This year sometime, and I'll heave a sigh of relief when it happens.
What about me sawbench though???
