Stubley Drill Press
I picked up this little drill press recently. It's been in storage for a while but I have just moved into a new house that has a bit of room so it's time to clean it up.
I'm really impressed with how well this is made.
A quick Google search for Stubley Engineering and Manufacturing Co shows adds in Sydney newspapers from 1925 to 1938 and they manufactured machine tools for the Lithgow ammunition factory in 1940. Apart from that, nothing. I couldn't find a single picture of the same or even a similar drill press. Maybe I have the only one in existence.
I was intending to do a full rebuild and repaint but the paintwork is pretty good and everything seems to be working well. I'll just clean it up for now and see how it goes. I might do a full restore sometime in the future.

This is what it looked like when I picked it up.
It's now partially dismantled and is getting a clean and oil and a new belt.

I need a switch as well. Will see what I can find tomorrow.
Does anybody have any Stubley tools? Those were the droids I was looking for.

Certainly a nice press.... There seems to be lots of machines out there from that era that you never hear about.. The sad thing is the paper records are the first thing that seems to be destroyed when your shed is cleaned out after your gone...... I think we need to document our stuff so relatives know whats worth passing on to the next group of enthusiasts ... that way valuable history isn't lost.

It's cleaned, sanded, oiled, rewired and it has a new belt. Really happy with this little drill press. Runs smoothly. Speed changes are fairly simple. 110mm of travel on the quill and a really nice old keyed chuck.
I transferred it from the workmate, where I had it clamped down while I worked on it, to the bench and it weighs about 100kg.
It's an interesting mix of cast iron, cast aluminium and machined parts. The balls on the handles are solid aluminium (and possibly cast directly onto the handle rods) but one is missing. Seems to have been snapped off in a previous incident. I'll sort something out for that when it annoys me enough.

Now I'm moving onto this.

Paid a visit to The Maker of Sawdust (Sawdustmaker) on the weekend.
Found him playing with his new toy. A Vermec sphere turning jig/thingy.

A fun bit of gear. Nick offered to demo the device and I remembered I needed a new knob for the Stubley.
A few minutes later and I had this. Fitted it to the drill press by drilling and tapping the handle and the new knob.
