    Default Wadkin 12BGP

    Gday all,

I recently purchased a wadkin 12 BGP. Like many it has sat around for a number of years under a tarp and neglected but thankfully in generally good condition. A couple of photos below with the slide removed for more compact storing.

    Attachment 499383

From a quick look, it is missing a a few things, needs a good clean up and some wearing parts replaced.

Shortly after another panel saw was listed complete with crown guard, riving knife, a larger sliding table, rip fence, fixed table extension plus other bits I can't remember off the top of my head. It does have some scars with one handle broken and at least one broken cast foot. It appears this saw has generally seen a bit more use. Never-the-less I figured I could make 1 nice table saw out of the two and maybe sell off the remaining machine for parts. Too early to tell yet.

here are some photos of it with the slide and extension removed.

Unfortunately it is missing its nameplate. Otherwise it is straight and apparently runs. The seller told me he used it regularly up until 12 months ago. Took a good hour or so to free it up enough to retract the blade.

For the immediate future I would like to convert it to single phase until my shed is connected to 3 phase. I notice both saws have different motor arrangements which you can see these in the photos below.

Has anyone got experience they could share with converting these and which arrangement is easier to convert ?

    Second saw motor arrangement:

    First saw motor arrangement:

I also need to make a dolly for it to make moving it around easier. Current plan is to weld up some heavy angle iron and add some HD casters.

I will post updates as I go.

Robb, l don’t know if it’s just my iPad but your attachments aren’t working.

Ive had a bit to do with these saws, made some sliding table stop castings using lost foam.

Id be very careful putting it up on castors.
We Bought one new in 1975 or so at UNSW for the IA teacher training lab.
I was using it one day and was doped up on antihistamine which I’d taken after being badly stung by bluebottles during my lunchtime surf.
I had a full sheet of 32 mm MDF on the sliding table and when I pulled it all the way back the saw started to tip over.
My offsider saved the situation and took over whilst I retired to the office for the afternoon.
Point being even if the castors have brakes the instability will be increased.
Might be better to put it up on a welded up steel pallet and use a pallet jack to move it around.

thanks for the heads up on the attachments. A thread is no good without pics so I will try and sort it out.

I was actually thinking along the lines of those HD castors that retract out of the way, but as you suggested t may be better to just avoid the "quick cut" temptation and use a pallet jack.

Custom timber pallets are great . Ive put almost everything up on them . You can attach extra things to them like supports for fixing dust extraction pipe in place . You can also tweak heights so machines line up to match same heights of other machines or be raised to clear other machines . The pallet jack can live under a pallet sitting under a machine not in use every day . You could do all the same things with castors but I like Pallets . Maybe there is an amount of machines needed before a pallet jack is a better option than lots of castors .

I have a 10AGS three Phase Bursgreen which I changed out the 2HP Motor for a 3 HP . I made a new motor mount for it . The 10 AGS main body and 12 GBP main body look to be the same design and size possibly .

And I think the only thing with going from three phase to single phase is that Single phase motors are larger than three phase .
The motor hangs on the under side of the mount so maybe its not going to be a problem .

Ok I think I have to start again, I can't seem to edit the post to correct the photos.

So here was the first saw I purchased. I only have photos of it disassembled for now:

    Wadkin Saw B 1.jpg

    Wadkin Saw B 4.jpg

    Wadkin Saw B 5.jpg

This one is generally in good nic and was the most recent owner used it for cutting up form ply.

This is the second saw. You can see the side extension table, the bigger slide and the accessories. This was used for the last 20 years in a timber mill and clearly has done more work. Worth it alone for the bigger tables and accessories though. This one is missing its data plate unfortunately.

    Wadkin Saw A 9.jpg

    Wadkin Saw A 10.jpg

    So onto the motor arrangements.

The first saw has an end mounted motor although I am not sure if that is the correct terminology but the motor bolts to the saw via a flange on the end of the motor.

    Wadkin Saw B 2.jpg

The second saw has more a traditional mounted motor in that it has feet that bolts to a plate.

    Wadkin Saw A 7.jpg

I suspect the latter will be the easier version to convert but only because I have never really had much to do with the end mount style motors.

I saw here someone suggested in another thread to use a VSD on the 3 phase to convert to single phase. Can anyone explain how that works to a non-electrical person ? Anyone know what the rough costs of the VSD are ?

Hopefully the photos come through this time.

Great job with that new mount, thanks for sharing.

Looking at both my saws there does seem to be a bit of room around them so hopefully shouldn't be a big problem.

thanks for the idea they indeed look pretty smart.

Taking a lesson from Clear Out I guess I could make a wedge leg for under the table guides to stop the table from tipping once the table is "in position". I have seen youtube videos where people have something wedged under there to stop tipping. I did notice when we picked it up it was pretty easy to unbalance.

What thickness boards do you use to make the pallets from ?

There is heaps online about VFDs (Jump on YouTube) or take a look at this forum below:

I think I saw that second one on FB Market place here in Brisbane earlier this year? Could have been another one?

Interested to see your journey with this saw!

I purchased one a few weeks ago but haven't been able to put it back together yet as I am rearranging the shed.
it came from a furniture maker you used it for the last 20 years but needed something with a scoring blade to better handle manufactured boards.

So awesome you got the mitre gauge with the second machine, I need to track one down. As well as the fine adjust pinion gear rod.

Here are a few pics of mine, a bit younger than yours.

that is a nice looking saw Tom. You will be making chips before I do I think. Mine will need some TLC before she turns on.

Funny you say that about the mitre. I nearly bought one on ebay the day before the second turned up - thanks goodness someone steadied my hand

You are right the second saw is pretty well complete except for the sliding table side extension - like the looks of that cast beauty on your saw. Very nice indeed.

I figured it should not be too hard to make an extension up.

The boards on the pallet top are 40mm thick. The three beams they are glued and nailed to are around 80mm x 80mm . So they raise machines by 120mm .

I have my Wadkin PK and Bursgreen 10 AGS table saws on extra wide pallets as well . Both have the extended tables fitted, to each saw, all down onto a wide pallet for each one .
