I am not going to give you the typical "depends ..." Is it a Wadkin MF or ME ? This is what I have observed over the years:

    MA - $750 - $1,500
    ME - $1,000 - $1,500
    MF - $1,500 - $2,500

Sometimes you can get lucky - there was a very neglected MF over in WA that went for under $100 at Auction last week. It was that rusty I assumed it went for parts, it had obviously spent its last little while in the weather - yes potentially an option to restore but if the motors are gone then where would you even find replacements.

Mortisers like these have pretty much been replaced with Festool Dominos and CNC BUT you still get the old school fit outs who use them. I personally own one for the pure enjoyment of using the machine and I think it's superior in that it gives more classic joinery that I like to do.

I have no idea of the value of an ME over your side of the Ditch. It also depends a lot on what chisels etc. come with it.

Wadkin ran a couple of different Test Number sequences over the years. Test No. 4394 would date to either late 1926 or to 1935. As the ME was designed for flat belt drive it's more likely to be 1926 (so one hundred years old soon).

Any chance of some photos (especially of the tag)?

    Cheers, Vann.

Thats a good point the tooling that comes with the machine should always be a consideration. Chains and Chisels can easily total an additional $1,000 if you buy it now.

    Hi Charlie
I have a Wadkin mortiser and need to purchase some new chain, bar & sprocket sets.
Would you know where I could get them. I’ve seen a manufacturer in India but am concerned about quality.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.
    Regards
    Pete.

    Hi Pete,

There are a few second hand ones on this ebay page https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_f...0&LH_PrefLoc=2

Also try contacting Scott & Sargeant and Daltons Wadkin, if they don't sell then they might be able to point you in the right direction.

    Cheers Nigel

    Thanks Nigel.

    Anyone bought the Indian ones?

    Pete.

No idea Pete - I can't actually find someone who has bought them. Put it this way even if it lasts 1/2 the amount of time then an old English made one @ 1/4 of the price it make sense. Indiamart seems like the go - the eBay ones from India seem more expensive.

When I have my Wadkin MA up and running I might buy one to test out.

    Thanks Charlie.

I’ll get a set and give it a try and get back to you.

I’m sure others would like to know how they perform too.

    Best regards to you.

    Pete.

Yeah that'd be good thanks Pete. Id like to know . Ive been watching them on ebay for years but have not had the need to go buy any yet.
The old ones I have keep going strong.

I think the Indian ones must be pretty good. Surely we would have heard bad reports about them otherwise by now. Ive never heard of anyone who has used one or anything bad about them .

I got asked recently if I knew anyone looking for tooling, they looked in good order, old stuff. I can ask what he wants and it might be cost effective to ship
