    Default wadkin CK

I had a week spare recently so knocked this nice little thing out. I haven't done a full resto thread because theirs one already some where. This one dates from 1945. Its going to live over the pond so the motor was rewound for 22Ov. My motor guy tried to tease out the star windings but the bitumen was too brittle and brought off the insulation on he windings.
These are really nice little saws and this one has presets for various angles and compounds. They can take the old style gun metal trenching head which work really well. They come up pretty cheap as well.

Thats awesome Wallace. I have aspirations to restore one of these as it'll better suit my needs. A CC is way too big. I am interested to understand more about the motor restoration and have little to zero understanding of motors and electrics. Do you mean to say the motor was converted to Single Phase 220v? Or is it still 3 Phase but now just 220v?

Also have you got some history on the CK iterations? Someone mentioned to me the early ones are a pain to get setup back to 90° once you've set it to another angle, the later ones have presets which would be the obviously the better one to look out for.

This was 44Ov 3 phase to make it easier for running off a single phase supply it has been rewound to 22Ov. Its still 3 phase but it can be ran off a single phase supply easily via a vfd.
I've got another CK that doesnt have presets and yes its a pain to get exactly back to 9O

Thanks for the pictures (and especially the tag photo )

I don't think you should let that stop you. We all like WIP photos - and you'd be sure to cover different details (as well as previously covered ones). It may be of little interest to some, but of great interest to anyone thinking of buying or overhauling a CK themselves.

Either way, keep up the good work (and the good pikkies).

    Cheers, Vann.

Unfortunately for you, they're like hens teeth in Australia (and common as muck here in New Zealand).

I have an early CK. I briefly had a CC but, say you say, they just take up too much space.

My very early one has no presets. I bought a rusted and seized 1946 CK (for parts) - it has presets, though they're a bit flogged out. As it was a basket case I never had a chance to try the presets for accuracy.

And I could have sworn there was a Wadkin CK thread by wallace - but can't locate it.

I believe 1945 was the last year that "Reset" button was fitted to Wadkin machines.

    BrookhirstB.jpg

My 1945 PK (PKA 800) has it. The rusted and seized 1946 CK (CK 1011) hasn't. Apart from the button and cast writing, the "Brookhirst" doors appear to be identical.

The brass cover on the carriage is new to me. A nice touch, left bare brass like that.

The one on the rusted and seized 1946 CK was cast iron. I know because I had to smash it with a hammer to get the bearings out , so that I could remove the motor from the arm (it really was seized).

I've just been out to the garage to check, and my 1936 CK (CK 349) has a cast aluminium carriage cover.

    Cheers, Vann.

    Thanks Van,

Would I be correct in saying the first photo below left is the earlier CK (no presets) and the one on the right the later CK with the presets?

Certainly the left hand one is earlier (mine is earlier again). If you look carefully at the bottom of the vertical column, the lowest of the three levers on the LH side is a preset "catch" (for want of a better term) and you can make out some preset notches. Note the upstand is part of the base casting.

    Early-ish CK.

Later the upstand became a separate casting.

    CK preset6.jpg CK 906 of 1945.

Then a scale was added - but it looks like maybe the presets were eliminated?

    CK preset5.jpg CK 1778 of 1953.

Somewhere about the time production moved to one of the former Bursgreen factories the scale pointer was moved to the other side of the machine.

    CK preset3.jpg CK preset4.jpg BCK 57353 of possibly 1957.

I'm not sure if that has helped.

Thanks Vann, yes very helpful - much appreciated

Whilst they are not that common in Australia I am keen to replace my Bosch Gliding Mitre Compound saw, this saw is probably the better of all the saws of it's type but doesn't do things like trenching\dados.
