The manual is not very helpful. It describes the adaptor as a 'sleeve' - but no picture and no dimensions of the sleeve .

Thanks for pics Vann . I have both those types but not sure on diameter being 13" or 11" . Ill have a measure.
The smaller ones for the BRA are only 8 or 9 " I think .

I'm cleaning the paint job, A later close grey over the original Wadkin Grey, by first spraying it down with water with Metho and a little ammonia mixed in . Id have added dish washing liquid as well but didn't have any at hand . Just a spray and scrub with Coarse steel wool .
Some of the rust has been hit with the wire brush . some of the worst missing paint where I don't like it missing is being re touched with a brush . Some missing paint and rust is staying like around the base . I want to have it looking original as possible but in a buffed well kept look , with some patina from use .
After I washed and scrubbed it I went over with a steel wool and linseed oil and turps mix . This shines it up and leaves a fine film that quickly hardens in a hot shed . It shows up where I need to re touch out some things I don't like , like some paint spots that are light and showing up . And some of the drill holes I filled and touched out need to be fine tuned . When its good I'm going to give it a fine thinned coat of Estapol . Not sure if I'm going to spray it or wipe it on with a rag yet , probably sprayed then wiped. I don't want it all glossed up and thick .
When its dry I can fine cut back and wax for just the right shine . If it comes up looking as good as I hope I'm doing the PK the same way . The pictures below just show the cleaning up so far with no coats of anything yet.

pic 2. Trying to get the wheel off I went through all the below tools .

Pic 3. I ended up welding this together to get in there, and get either side of the nut.

Cleaned up the part of the upper ways . The bit that slides the top wheel up and down for blade tension . It must have been sitting in the rain for a while at the scrap yard, part of the machined parts were painted over as well it being all clogged up with rust.
I'm doing this clean up and re assembly under a truss which I chained up a block and tackle which was good for putting the top back on . The bandsaw was taken apart the day I bought it about 4 years back . So two of us could get it in a trailer and home . Its nice seeing it growing back together after being a pile of parts.

Pic 4 is cleaned, touched up and coated with a clear coat of Estapol , A thinned 50 / 50 mix of gloss and satin . Then wiped off with a rag. Im going to take a bit of the shine off with a 0000 steel wool and wax later. The clear will also seal the bright steel, like bolt heads and parts not painted , except for the table tops. See how it goes

I got stuck into the upper moving parts of the saw today .
I first noticed another broken grease nipple so took the end caps off and checked the bearings for the upper wheel . The rear one with the broken nipple is pictured. The shaft was free spinning and sounded a bit dry . like the bottom bearing , It hadn't had fresh grease for a long time but they both were running in old grease . The stuff stuck around the end of the shaft was thick and hard . I unscrewed and cleaned out both nipples , replaced the broken one and pumped fresh grease through both , rotating the shaft until the old was gone and new stuff ran through the lot . I didn't want to undo and take out the shaft , then pull the bearings , wash them and put the whole lot back together. Thought Id save some time .

    IMG_6484.jpgIMG_6485.jpg

Got it all cleaned up and ready to fit back on with just the Gib and backing plates to go . The twisted wire wheel had them good in twenty minutes with all the bolts looking new. It interesting looking at how the bolts and fittings were made and finished back when this was made You can see a much more distinctive turned look about the bolts , spiraling cuts running inwards where things were parted off I think . All true and square but more hand operated is what I think I am seeing . I should have taken pictures of what I mean .

The two parts here on the left fit together up high . The lower one is how the upper wheel tilts for tracking of the blade. I only understood how the blade or top wheel tilt worked today when it was fitted up . I had thought about it over the years looking at it in pieces but gave up trying to understand it . Too hard . As usual it turns out its simple and solid .

    IMG_6488.jpgIMG_6489.jpg

I kept running into this tool on the bench today . It was there because a friend had his daughter in the shed a few days ago and she wanted an old Key for the "Harry Potter Look " and I was searching a nearby box looking . A few tools ended up near the saw parts . I couldn't believe it when I found it fitted the Gib screws . There is only three of them on the machine but the tool does a nice job from the angle it works them . I showed Pete in a text and it turns out its a tool post spanner off a lathe . Not any more though . Its My Wadkin Gib adjuster

    IMG_6492.jpgIMG_6493.jpgIMG_6494.jpg

The next big surprise for Me was these two fragile bits.
The blade tension pointer and indicator .
like I said before , This saw was sitting in parts under cover from the day I bought it until I moved and built the new workshop . It was a massive move and I remember being disappointed at seeing this part of the saw had been miss handled while loading and these two parts had bent and one snapped off at the casting . It was the only damage I can remember happening with the 30 machines shifted. I didn't go and thoroughly check out how bad the break was at the time. I found them today and checked them out. Turns out its minor and there is a deep threaded hole for each to be fitted into . They both must have only been in their holes a mm or two . Both just need straightening and the break in the cast is a chip still attached on the thread and nut on the left . I spent too much time thinking about a problem that didn't exist . I'm real happy about this saw at how complete it is . I don't think anything is missing .
    IMG_6490.jpgIMG_6491.jpg

So the upper bits are almost all in place, just got to fix the tension indicators and paint the spun metal dish that goes over the front bearing housing. Ready to start on the wheels and the blade guides after that.

Fitted the repaired Blade tension indicators and gave the upper section and all its parts a coat of the clear finish . All bright parts were wire brushed , And the ways given a smear of grease so the clear should seal the bright and the Original paint and the grease will protect the sliding parts . Its a bit glossy in pictures because its wet still.

    Going well Auscab .

Your clean-up of the original paint is impressive too.

    Hi Rob,

    All looking very flash.
I'm watching very carefully because I want to go over a few things on my DR, it came out of a working pattern shop and it works OK. I'm not into making them too pretty because I'm lazy but you seem to have hit just about the right median position.

Very nice to have someone else go first and solve the problems. Such a generous guy!

    Have fun,
    Alli

Thanks Vann and Alli and Gazza58 , and any one else further back .

Gazza , if you see one ( a PK ) jump on it quick , if you can .

We have had a few really hot days so Ive been having a go slow approach .
Its Filthy work as well being hot. Its always nice and makes me appreciate my wood work after a few days working on metal stuff like this.

The large shed isn't to bad as long as the doors are open at both ends and a breeze is blowing . We are near the coast and when we first moved in people kept talking about the wind , It can get real fierce coming straight in off Bass Straight . A bit of coastal breeze on a hot day is real nice though .

I had a bit of a dilemma with over thinking the wheel colour. They came to me Red .
"Should I paint them back to Gray ?
Bugger it they will live unseen behind the doors . Except the top rear . . Touch up the Red and think about it another day !!" is what I ended up doing

Amazing wheels they are as well . I wonder and think Wadkin must have had these made for them possibly .
Or they had a huge press . These things are what looks to be pressed or stamped or are such thick sections rolled or spun ? I wouldn't think they were, out of 1/4 inch steel . Quite heavy to lift .
Now hows that for Flash !! .
That's the bottom wheel on left , then after cleaning and some sanding where chipped it was touched up . Then put back on the saw and the nut and washer tightened and the wheel spun while being sprayed with the same clear top finish .
The top wheel is Red both sides and the bottom is Red on the front and original grey on the back . Whoever repainted it years ago left the wheels on for painting covering nuts and washers in Red as well .

Ive got to fit guards before I order blades . Getting close to finish now though . There is just Table , Guides and doors to do . as well as find the flap that closes over the door on the right . It covers the upper guides and its post and goes up or down with them . No idea what Ive done with it ???

    Flash!!

Where is your new shop that you get Bass strait breezes? My father's family are all over that way, they used to be shark fishermen out in the strait.

    Have fun,
