Wadkin on Ebay Melbourne
industrial woodworking tenoning machine Wadkin EC | eBay
I just saw this Wadkin Tenoner on ebay . I have the same model . I Love the thing .
Any one else here got one ? I know Matty has a five head.
Wadkin sold them with the option of 2 to 5 heads , this ebay one is a 3 head.
That made them useful to cabinet makers who only need 2 or 3 ? up to joinery workshops producing House windows and doors needing 5.
Two heads does everything Ive ever needed in Furniture. From big tables down to chairs.
As a Cabinet Maker I don't do scribe mouldings to cabinet doors . These machines can do the scribe mould to both sides of a tenon then cut it to length with the last head . Amazing! I think thats if you make house windows and doors only ?
I'm not that knowledgeable to the joinery possibilities though , so if you know more , tell us.
I think the cutting to length has to do with the machines ability to not only produce tenons by cutting them on a set length of timber but also being able to throw in slightly random length and cut of the first shoulder produced not the end , with a raised spring stop , the second one is made and if its still a bit long it trims it . Any one know more about that ? Or have you seen them being used in other ways ?
I used the spring stop for a set of chairs where 4 at a time shaped back splats per chair were tenoned at both ends and cut off the shoulder. It saved tons of work . I never figured out how I would have done it another way.
Here is a picture of mine at the old workshop . Its under a tarp now patiently waiting for a new workshop to house it .
We had just got it into place in the picture and it doesn't have the rolling carriage fitted yet . What a job it was getting that thing into place . Over a dirt backyard an inch at a time !!

I used one of these machines when I worked in a joinery shop. From memory they have five heads. the first two cut the tenon, the second two are for the scribe and the fifth was a saw that cut the tenon to length. The two that cut the tenon cheeks can be off set to cater for sections the have a rebate for fitting panels. If you buy that machine be aware that the tenon cutters do not have a straight edge, they are slightly curved to counter the fact that they are not parallel but set in the head at an angle. There is a choice for using the scribing cutters. The old style three panel internal door had an ovolo mould on both sides where a casement window has the ovolo mould on one side only. The sliding table had a stop, that could cut rails without constant measuring of the rails. It is a really lovely machine to use.
