If that part is missing get a metal worker (unless you can do it yourself) to mill a piece for you with a tapped hole in the back for a threaded rod, then get a wing nut (or nut and spanner) to tighten the piece once in position

The piece that is made will then slide down the rebated slot in the fence and extend down to meet the outfeed table, this is there to prevent slim thickness of stock from sliding under the gap in the outfeed fence.

Thanks for that. Good to know. And thanks for your comment re the restoration. I hate seeing youtube videos of 'restorations' where they just indiscriminately spray paint everything including cables and the motor along with all the bolt heads etc. I stripped this jointer to the bare metal. It's for sale, BTW. I was going to keep it but found a 16" jointer to restore.
