I started to clean up the blade housing and its made from cast ali so should come up nice and shiny. I use various tools to get the desired finish. Wire wheel to get in the nucks, flapper disc on the grinder for removing material quickly, those sandpaper circle thingies that go in a drill ( they are really good for making the surface uniform), power file and then the ROS, I finally tried that abranet stuff and I am very impressed. Doesn't clog and lasts ages.
I quite like the finish the ROS gives so not quite sure if I will do the full shiny treatment.

Just to prove this little saw had been used for cutting ali for a long time I cleaned out the extraction pipe. It was jammed solid with ali swarf/dust
I then did the other half of the blade guard
I was thinking of fixing this hole with some apoxy. I found a nice crack next to it. I'm not sure if I should try and repair it or leave alone. I cant imagine 70 year old cast aluminium would weld very well.

Drill a small hole at each end of the crack to stop it spreading.

Nice job so far. Just the casting work on the base is amazing in itself.
Welding aluminium weakens the surrounding metal.
It would look better if you squared up the edges of the hole and glued in a fitted piece of oversize aluminium which could then be filed / sanded into shape.

I got round to fixing the hole and crack. drilled holes at either end and V'd out a bit for the filler to get hold. To keep the filler in place I stuck some foil tab on the inside.
This is the stuff I got, I was going to use epoxy with ali powder in it but found this in a motor factors.
It goes off in 10 mins and sands really well.
Time for some crust removal. Most things on this are pretty pitted so instead of a wire wheel I went straight for the power file and a 40 grit belt. Then went through the grits before buffing with compound.
For doing a flat object I stick various grits to some formica and sit and rub
I started working on the fences which are quite rough
