    Default Wadkin PK/PJ Protractor.

When I bought my PK it didn't come with a protractor. The protractor on a PK was originally designed for the PJ - hence the "PJ 44" pattern number.

Auscab had a second protractor. It's the lower one in the photo.

    Rob's protractors.jpg

It appears that a previous owner adapted it for some other saw, as it has a narrower bar (the 'new' saw must have had a narrower slot in the table) and it has one end cut off (the 'new' saw must have had the slot closer to the blade).

I had a second mitre half (main half). Following a bit of horse trading over the last several months, these two items swapped sides of the Tasman Sea.

Prot4.jpg The near end should be 45 angled degrees.

Here I have removed the 'star' knob and narrow bar in preparation for some remedial work.

    Cheers, Vann.

    Default Remedial Work.

Here's another view of the cut off end.

    Prot5.jpg

I had a lump of cast iron laying about. After a lot of cutting and grinding I'd roughed out a new end piece.

    Prot6.jpg

A bit more preparation and I braised it on.

    Prot1.jpg

Followed by a bit of trimming.

    Prot3.jpg

That's as far as I've gotten, and it will now go on the back burner until I have more time (retiring soon - yaah).

    Cheers, Vann.

    Hi Vann .
I was searching Ebay years a go and spotted that protractor sitting on this saw up near Sydney . It passed the end of sale without a bid . The starting price was $90. The seller put it up again . I messaged him and offered him $90 + postage for the protractor and he could keep the saw . I got a quick reply of " Yes " from him .
He kept listing the saw. I'm not sure if it sold or not . Pretty rare thing to see . Glad I knew what it was . A few years before that and I would have no idea what it was off. I had only been interested in Wadkin for a year or so . Funny thing was that it was not to far from where I picked up that other early PK . Within 15 K I think .

Here's the two pictures from Ebay.
There's a fair bit of a gap between the protractor and the blade that could of been left on rather than sawn off .

Thanks for that bit of background history (and photos).

It's amazing what you spot in the least expected places sometimes. I was looking at old woodlathes (heavens knows why - I've got a Wadkin RT woodlathe) when I spotted this incomplete one.

    Rest4.jpg

On asking for more information from the seller, he sent me this.

    Rest5.jpg

Not one, but TWO Wadkin RS/RT banjos - off an old wooden bed woodlathe. I bought the lathe parts, kept what I needed, and ditched most of the rest. The thing is, my RT had a broken banjo handle. I now have two banjos, and I was able to sell the third to someone who needed parts.

    Cheers, Vann.

So much for the back burner... I just spent 20 minutes or so each day over several days, cutting, grinding and linishing. Cut a bit. Let it cool. Mark it up. Grind a bit. Mark it up again. Grind a bit more...

It's not quite identical in shape to the other end yet but, this morning I primed it to see how it looks (it looked very different un-primed as the shiney ground cast iron, and yellow braze stood out like dogs whatsits).

    Prot21.jpg

The face and base are still proud and these will need to be milled back inline with the existing machined faces.

    Prot22.jpg Prot23.jpg

A closer look at that brazing.

    Prot24.jpg

I may pay to have that machining done, or wait until my Wadkin LP is up and running - and do the milling myself . No urgency.

    Cheers, Vann.
