    I like that style of "On/Off" buttons, but most RB buzzers appear to have the smaller buttons with shrouds.

    Default ...And Coming.

    Yet another from the UK.

    RBA 485.jpg

    2nd type of fence. Solid knobbed cast iron handwheels. No depth-of-cut scale or pointer (not on the outfeed table anyway).

    RBA 485, test 19730, of 1943.

    wRBA 485 19730 UK.jpg

    Note the really rough casting behind the tag. Possibly a wartime finish, or maybe some previous owner has removed all the filler. Notice also the voltage - 346 volts - I wonder if that's suitable for today's 400v system?

    Nothing to see here. Move along please.

    But seriously - still held up at present. Almost
    no progress.

    Meanwhile, another RB has surfaced.

    RB 620b.jpg

    2nd type of fence. 5-spoked cast iron handwheels. No view from infeed table, but it looks like the On/Off buttons may be the large classic Wadkin type.

    I'd say it's been stored disassembled for a while - but it looks like it's complete.

    RB 620a.jpg

    RB 620, test 30372, of 1948.

    wRB 620 30372 NZ.jpg

    And the score revised:
    United Kingdom: 15;
    New Zealand: 13;
    Australia: nil;
    Canada: nil.

    Default Well, That's Frustrating...

    Another RB has shown up over here.

    RB-NH1.jpg

    Quite a late one with RD type of fence, complete with handwheel.

    RB-NH3.jpg

    3-spoked cast aluminium handwheels for table height adjustment.

    RB-NH2.jpg

    And the large classic Wadkin On/Off buttons .

    But sometime during its career someone repainted it, and an NH knife grinding machine, and put the wrong badge back on each machine.

    Default From the UK.

    Another from the UK.

    RB 677.jpg

    2nd type of fence. Cast iron 5-spoke handwheels. Missing the blade guard.

    RB 677, test 32956, of 1949.

    wRB 677 32956 UK.jpg How do I make out "677" from that? Easy, I asked the seller .

    Default Confirmation.

    In the seventh post of this thread I speculated...

    * RB 109 may date to 1928, as that is the year the pattern shop it came from was built...
    Later I said

Later in 1925 they requested tenders for specifications 61 to 99. Several of these specifications were for woodworking machinery. Then on 2nd September, 1925, they added a late specification, No.101, for the supply of 12 Bench Planers - High Speed...

    ...These tenders closed on 15th February 1926, and the tender for Specification 101 for 12 Bench Planers - High Speed was won by Wadkin & Coy. With the exception of 1 further Bench Planer (ordered in September 1928) Wadkin did not win any other orders for planers...

    ...A summary of winning tenders was published in July, 1926...

    ...Edit: Anyways - for the tender from Wadkin & Coy. to have arrived in New Zealand by 15th February, 1926, it would have had to have been in the post by about 1st January, 1926 (there was some correspondence about 6 weeks being required for mail in each direction). This means that Wadkin's RB planer/buzzer must have been ready to go, at least in concept (if not already in production) by the end of 1925. So the period of production for the RB can be assumed to be from ~1926 to ~1954.
    Since writing that I have found a Wadkin booklet advertising the old RC buzzer (including the 9" version) in 1928, while Henry ("clear out") has a 1928 catalogue showing the 9" RB, and I concluded the RB went into production in 1928.

    I now have confirmation that RB 109 was tested in October, 1926 (12th - if I read that correctly).

    RB 109 Test Sheet.jpg

    RB 116 was tested 6 days later. It appears they were being tested at a rate of ~2 per day (allowing for a weekend during those 6 days). Making the assumption that Wadkin started most models at No.105, RB 109 was the fifth RB made, and RB 116 was the twelfth.

    Therefore I conclude that production of Wadkin's RB buzzer was from mid-1926 to ~1954, with around 920 machines having been produced (RB 105 to RB 1024).

    Cheers, Vann.

    Default From Waitomo.

    This is another RB that has previously frustrated my efforts to identify it.

    RB 350.jpg

    It belongs to a guy I know and is located in the Waitomo region of the North Island (I don't have his permission to be more specific - and we'll call him Al). Al has a monstrous old shed on the family property with a Cresent bandsaw and this RB, and has recently acquired a Wadkin RM and a few other woodworking machines. Until now he's been mostly a handtool worker, but is in the process of getting 3-phase power installed - so work on getting a few machines runable has started.

    The RB spent a large part of it's life in Rotorua, where the sulphur laden atmosphere has resulted in a certain amount of corrosion - including the tag (and the screws that hold it on).

    RB 355.jpg I just couldn't read that .

    Al has recently managed to remove the tag and tells me the Test Number is 32855 - making it an early 1949 machine. The Serial number is less clear, but looks like maybe RB 868.

    RB 353.jpg Cast-iron 5-spoke handwheels

    RB 352.jpg Shrouded On/Off buttons.

    Note that the motor does not fit the motor stand, and is most likely a replacement.

    RB 351.jpg

    Narrow "Brookhirst" door, and some additional electrical components.

    RB 354.jpg

    All the features are correct for a 1949 machine - but the serial number doesn't fit the sequence (though that's not unknown). As it's hard to read, I'd suggest the serial number is not RB 868, but RB 668 - which would fit nicely:
    RB 620, test 30372, of 1948 - New Zealand - Wadkin Ltd. tin tag;
    RB 668, test 32855, of 1949 - New Zealand - Wadkin Ltd. tin tag;
    RB 677, test 32956, of 1949 - United Kingdom - Wadkin Ltd. tin tag;

    Cheers, Vann.
