Default Wadkin/Robinson Machinery Looking For A New Home

    Hi all,

I have a fella locally (Newcastle NSW) who's closing down his heritage window and door business and is looking to sell everything. He would prefer to sell the lot including timbers, machinery and everything in between, all for a large sum but he did say he would consider selling the machinery by itself.

I visited his workshop through the week and spoke to him about the conditions of sale and took some pictures to share with the forum. Some really cool gear here. I personally love the tenoner, it's the perfect size.

Here is what's available - all in working order:

Wadkin MF Chain and Chisel Morticer - Comes with a number of chisels and some chains - Not many chain bars though

    IMG_1920.jpg IMG_1919.jpg IMG_1922.jpg IMG_1924.jpg IMG_1925.jpg IMG_1923.jpg

Robinson RP-E 3 Head Tenoner - Comes with original grease guns and some spare cutters

    IMG_1947.jpg IMG_1935.jpg IMG_1932.jpg IMG_1933.jpg IMG_1936.jpg

Wadkin SQ Ripsaw - Comes with a few spare blades

    IMG_1946.jpg IMG_1942.jpg IMG_1943.jpg IMG_1944.jpg IMG_1945.jpg

Bandsaw - Unknown brand to me - Interesting switch gear

    IMG_1939.jpg IMG_1940.jpg IMG_1938.jpg

If anyone is interested in any of this gear, let me know and I'll put you in touch with Bill.

    Thanks everyone

    Bryce

Those are a couple of nice machines. It’s very rare to see wb haigh and co machines over here let alone there. I don’t think I’ve seen a bandsaw come up for sale. I have a spindle moulder made by them and dating from 1912

Some beautiful machines amongst this lot mate. All still working making windows and doors up until a few months ago.

Yeah? I've never seen one before. It looks to be an early casting with the cast spoke wheels. Nice big motor on it too. I love the big switch gear box.

    Default Wadkin Saw

    Hi Bryce,

I have a very old Wadkin rip saw, Model HR, (Cast brass tag says manufactured in 1918). It's missing some parts (Pieces of fence assembly, original crown guard etc.)
It is similar in some regard to the one that you photographed here.
Did you by any chance take a picture of the other side of the fence? I'd like to see the full tilt mechanism to maybe help me replace the missing pieces on mine. You can see from the vertical slot in the middle of the fence support and the lonely pivot pin on the right hand end (rear) hanging out over an unused slot in the table that there are pieces of the original fence missing. I have no clue as to whet these pieces may have looked like. I assume that there was another piece of the fence closer to the blade that slid down in the slot to maintain contact with the table when the fence assembly was tilted and that the missing piece at the rear of the fence assembly was a bracket to support the pivot pin and ensure that the fence remained parallel to the saw blade.

    Hi Richard,

That is a old saw and thank you for sharing, do you have a pic of the Wadkin & Co tag?

    Cheers

I did post this in my first post a couple of years ago and Vann said that he'd never seen one like it so here it is again.
I'm currently re-greasing the bearings on the shaft and I have to replace one of them as it is shot.
When I've done this I hope to be able to get a good picture of the saw from the left side showing the cast "Wadkin and Co, Leicester, Eng" markings on the body of the saw above the tag but it's very much jammed into the shed at the moment so I can't get the pic.

    Cheers,

Yes it would be great if you could start a thread on each of your old machines showing your restoration progress, it just makes it so much easier when searching the forum for these types of topics

So if the tag is original then Wadkin must have cast a number of generic tags for 1918 and then filled in the blanks, I wonder if they did a batch for others years say 1919,1920 etc. before dropping that type of tag. We just need to find any other Wadkin machine from these early years to verify this is how they used to tag their machines.

Here's a 1922 Wadkin, cast lettering similar to yours (I looked at your profile and found a better pic of your rip saw) but the tag looks more like the Wadkin tags we see on other early machines, so when did the 1918 style tag end?

    Hi Richard,

Thanks for sharing photos of your Ripsaw with the forum. Awesome piece of gear that.

I didn't get a photo of the other side of the fence I'm afraid. I'll do some more research for you to try and find a photo of what that fence looks like on other saws to help you determine what's missing.

    Thanks
    Bryce
