I have ordered some of those tile drills ( I thought I had better put my money where my mouth is) so at some time in the future I will have to report back on them. I have dealt with Smith & Arrow several times in the past mainly for sanding type products (flap discs, sander discs, angle grinder cutting discs etc) and other products including twist bits and have been very pleased both with the products and the level of service.

At one time S & A were a Forum sponsor too, but a quick perusal of the sponsors no longer shows them listed.

Last night I almost pulled the button on one of those fancy drill bits.
Under $10 that’s ok but I was getting nearly $20 at checkout.

I cut off a small piece of sawplate and drilled a hole through it ok. I took a picture but I still can't post it

Actually, there's a saw-nut in the hole. I used one of my Cobalt bits and a drop of cutting oil.I was going to try to draw back the temper a bit to make it softer but I thought I would try it "as is" and there was no problem.Earlier I drew back the temper on half of the piece I cut off the corner of the big Disston I am rehandling and found that I could drill through that. Before I got too excited, I realized that Mr Disston may have already tempered that part of the sawplate before drilling the holes for the old handle. I found that I could also drill through the end I had not tempered, so still not sure I achieved anything by heating that part up to 400 degrees C except that I did not damage it in any way by doing so. I wish they would fix the forum so I could post pictures again.

It's a very short 57 sec video (hardly worth breaking out the beer)and not very clear. Actually I am not sure whether they are punching the plate using the handle with holes already drilled as the pattern or whether the "stems" are drills. Unfortunately the clarity is so poor I can't really see, but I am leaning towards the plate being punched. I think this is the way the holes were made as there is usually as distinct burr on the reverse side of the plate that is conducive with punching as opposed to a slight burr resulting from drilling.

The first few seconds before the punching/drilling operation demonstrate how wheat carving was achieved. Early models (before 1890s?) were carved by hand, but Disston were quite progressive in utilising machines to speed up production.

You are right and the Disston empire was quite secretive. There are still a couple of aspects in the blade process that have not been revealed. Only Houdini had more secrets in fact. The other aspect is that the video is for sale and the inference is that the copy you buy can be HD or SD and is higher quality (where have I seen that sort of marketing before ). $150 to $170 is a bit steep I would have thought and I think that is large American dollars, not dainty Aussie dollars.

Anyhow, if you care to keep looking there are four other Disston clips. I re-read the information on the clip I posted and I got it entirely wrong. There are two sets of drill clusters, which also incorporate the counter bore for the head (and medallion) of the saw screw. The employee drills one side, flips the handle, moves across to the other cluster and drills the "flip' side. He completely drills two handles in twenty seconds!

If she doesn’t stay I’ll need a drop off at the station
