Thread: Sunday Round Table Jabber - Sunday evening all welcome

Well not sure how the discussion ended up as I had to bow out to eat dinner, but here is the photo that i promised.

The tower unit in the middle runs 24x7 and is a file server for everything, i brush the front and the side big fan when i see a build up but the inside is surprising clean, the laptop is sort of temp and tends to be where i need it, it's the one i use for chat sessions when i'm in the shed.
The monitors are effectively protected from physical harm as they are at the back of the just high enough shelf spacing, this also seems to protect them from most dust.
The networking bits on the top shelf are the unluckiest as dust settles there quite well.

Lessons for when i redo the corner.
Build everything into at least top and side enclosed shelving.
Curtain style front covering will help in limiting dust.
Dust really isn't a huge issue.
Cheap keyboard/mouse combo's from officeworks are worth it.

If you must have a PC for any reason just make sure it's safe on a shelf and don't have dust blowing directly on it

I'm amazed that some of you have so little dust that you would even contemplate have a computer with a fan in there. I'm also sadly reminded how poor my dust management in the shed is, that I would be amazed at this prospect.

Tonight’s hot to trot subject matter(Not that we stick to it,but we do try)
Drum roll Please, its everything to do with sharping,generally a subject that most Wood workers can get quite passionate about,as there are as many ways to sharpen a edge tool as there are religions.
So please keep that in mind this evening.

That means those in Melbourne, Victoria ,Australia Earth ,we start at 7,30 Pm ish time, for those who live elsewhere ,I’m sure you can work out what time to join us because I can’t due to my forum name.

Sometime during the evening's program, I will switch to a live broadcast from the shed to demonstrate some very effective techniques for accurately grinding and honing bevels, straight and skewed.

This is of course subject to technology working as it should (Video and audio provided by Jools and her "trusty" I-thing)

Last nights chat we had Doug give us a demonstration using is 2/48 inch (For those that won’t accept [emoji6]) belt grinder for establishing a primary bevel of a Chisel.
We also had the pleasure of some fresh meat,thanks to Shane hope we didn’t freak you out to much.

We kept working on Bob,to give away his idea of using All thread to mark out a saw for re toothing instead of a paper template, before we fell into trying to work out policies regarding the ruling metric system over the antiquated imperial thingy to cool down the French issue.

And don't forget JC's great camera work. The lighting was a bit basic but very good for a first try. Next time it will be better I'm sure. The Idea we can show different methods of craft is good. Remember the people who make utube videos use lots of expensive gear to film.

Actually some You tubers I’ve watched have filmed just using a Phone camera.

But it would be great if other members wanted to follow Doug lead.

It was never intended to be a polished Youtube performance. It was transmitted live without the chance to edit or review the quality. We just went out there and turned on the lights and got into it.

I couldn't see the image that was getting broadcast so thanks for the feedback about the lights. I have a pair of LED worklights on a tripod that possibly could have made a big difference for next time. I also couldn't see the faces of the audience to get any visual feedback of whether the content was easily understood but from the comments everything was pretty clear.

That belt grinder is one of the most-used tools in the shed, but pairing it with the Veritas Mk II honing guide on that jig I made sure makes plane blade and chisel grinding easy and accurate.

That one cost me about $3200 I think. You can get a single speed one for a fair bit less but you really need the variable speed particularly if using it on wood. If I was buying one now (nearly four years later) I would go for a different brand because there are a lot of new designs out there that will do a lot more.

Matt, it may have slipped your mind but this Sunday is the day that Australia goes from three easy to understand timezones to five confusing ones.

Did you mean 7.30 AEST or AEDST?

This small detail might not affect a lot of us but Paul might have to come in from his shed an hour earlier.
