I can't make this Sunday because of my work commitment. Semi retirement seems to be interfering an awful lot!
Anyhow I was tasked with researching Jacaranda timber following on from the logs I grabbed from a neighbour.
The species is a native of South America, Argentina in particular, although I think I might have said Brazil (it comes from there too). It has been introduced to many sub tropical regions around the world including Australia of course. There are nearly fifty species in the general grouping which is why it sometimes seems to be called Rosewood and various other names, but those are for others in the group.
The type we see is referred to as Jacaranda Mimosifolia and has the classic mauve flower.
As far as uses for woodworkers are concerned it apparently carves and turns well and is used for pen blanks too. We actually had to look no further than our own Forum for info:

It looks from that discussion as though it is pretty versatile. Somewhere I saw that it has a density of 615kg/m³, which makes it one of the lighter hardwoods. There are another two trunks still to come down next door so I might look at grabbing those too.

We use a lot of jacaranda around here, mostly for turning - there was a lot of it planted and big trees are often felled or blown over in storms. It’s very easy to turn and has an interesting grain pattern. It’s also quite a stable wood (it moves with the seasons, but by similar amounts radially and tangentially so maintains it shape fairly well) and not too difficult to dry out successfully. Personally I wouldn’t use it for joinery if strength is required, it’s not strong particularly strong, and even the live trees are weak, and have a reputation for dropping branches. For smaller items or where strength isn’t an issue it can make a lovely contrast to darker woods.
