Suggest that you try my method:
* belt sander with 40 or 60 grit belt to take off surface crud and make all nasties highly visible,
* Manually remove all nasties,
* Then to jointer/thicknesser.

Rather than belt sander, I sometimes use a hand planer with sacrificial blades for the first step.

This minimises but does not remove risks

Graeme I use similar methods already, including metal-grinding flapdisks when needed. It has not so much been the extra steel bits, which have been few and far between. Some of the timber I have processed in that time was about as hard as steel anyway. A hell of a lot of timber has passed under those blades in the past five years. The job just became due to be done.

Before I installed the Shelix head about five or six years ago, removing the three straight knives, sharpening and resetting was the worst job in the shed. Now I think the new equivalent job, rotating all the cutters is still the worst, but it's far more pleasant. Once I got into the rhythm of the work it was pretty quick and painless. And the timber comes out looking POLISHED.

Matt just contacted me off-forum to ask me to run tonight's session because Paul decided to chicken out after losing the draw last week and Matt is feeling unwell.

So the topic for tonight's discussion - DRUM ROLL PLEASE ...

"How small, damaged or spalted does an offcut need to be before you throw it away?"

We all keep some offcuts and throw others - I suppose. So lets talk about the selection process.

Let's see where this takes us.

So tonight’s subject matter may be one of two, if We have the delightful company of Mr Bushmillar, we will insist he hosts this evening, due to him being absent last week with no note of absence.[emoji17]

Sunday is Back,

So the Round Jabber is back on tonight, an hopefully Peter does not feel let down like a 16 year old on a hot date waiting outside the local Dance hall.

Start time tonight is 7:30 pm on the Dot,give or take a few minutes either side.

Your saw appears to be a No.13 from W.Tyzack & Sons & Turner from around 1965. It is within their Elephant brand range.

Interestingly earlier models (1950 catalogue) had a more simple handle. I would have expected that to be the other way around.
