You will never guess.... working again and won't be home in time. Without trying to sound like Con the Fruiterer. Always working, working, working....

I was talking this evening about the "shaper lathe" thingy my friend in Queensland used to make oars.

It seems from this news article he put this machine together himself out of a couple of other machines, which is probably why I couldn't find any pictures of it anywhere. Ed was a very gifted marine engineer up until he "retired" and started making oars. He was a remarkable man.

    World wants Ocky Oars

ED McIlwain never imagined he would spend his retirement in his shed building an international business - but he has.
This week Mr McIlwain, owner of Ocky Oars, has sent his first box of dragon boat paddles to Malaysia and Singapore and he hopes it will be the first of many overseas shipments.
Mr McIlwain was frustrated with the price of buying boat oars so when he retired he played around with the idea of manufacturing his own.
He built a special machine to shape the oars in one go.
"It's a conglomerate of a couple of other machines,'' he said.
    "Nobody else uses this process.''
Then he got a call from a man in Western Australia who asked about dragon boat paddles and if it would be possible for Ocky Oars to make them.
Once they decided the idea was something they would like to pursue, a sample had to be sent to Canada and England.
"They had to approve whether you could have a licence to manufacture them,'' Mr McIlwain said.
Dragon boat paddles differ to normal oars in shape, size and weight.
"They are built to an international standard by the International Dragon Boat Federation, which is controlled by a committee in Europe,'' Mr McIlwain said.
"The specification book is about an inch thick.
I got sick of sitting around doing nothing - so I took up meditation.
