Default Portable drying racks - ideas please

Hi. I want to build some simple drying racks for spray painting. The catch is they need to be lightweight and movable and easy to fold to put in the car. maybe just one set of racks - 5 or so shelves - prefer more but that’s probably the minimum usable.

I’m thinking of maybe pirating a couple of Aldi portable sawhorses, and building from there.

Anyone made anything similar and have any ideas to share?

    Cheers
    Arron

Hi Arron, it would be easier to help you, if we had some pictures of what it is you want to hang?
I made a drying rack that is made from 75X32 pine. This was made to hang several different items that required painting. For ease of attaching the pieces, I used cup hooks spaced about 100mm on the 32mm edge. This piece sat in a U cutout on the 75mm side, which was then attached to a couple of cross feet. To dismantle, it was a matter of undoing 2 X 6mm bolts on the top beam.

Primarily flat panels, like kitchen cupboard doors. I would like it versatile though, so I could put bulky items on with a reconfiguration. The cup hooks are a good idea which I should include, never know when you want to hang things.

I would like something about 6 foot high, but can be deconstructed down to fit in car boot size space or less. I like the kind of drying racks which start out as just the verticals, then you fix the horizontals as you finish each piece and lift it on, working downwards so you aren’t placing new ones above finished ones. Minimum 150 mm between horizontal members, but reconfigurable so you can fit much larger items.

Also need to be able to accommodate very small items (eg small drawer fronts or box lids) so there would have to be at least one mesh shelf or something similar.

Naturally I can come up with lots of designs myself, or google them up, but I just want to know if anyone else has done this or seen something similar - I always like to start a project by asking around for any good ideas I might otherwise overlook.

Also, budget is pretty low, so best solution would be to repurpose something pre-existing.

I tried that sort of thing for doing flat stuff, the paint stuck to whatever it was laying on!!!!
I now use carpet edging, the stuff with little tacks in it, pull out the larger floor nails, and use it with the sharp side up.

Arron, why not make a rectangle frame, and put Diagonal cross pieces to the top and bottom, then just pop in a support post to make it stand up. concept similar to an Ironing board base, You can that way make it any size you want and to fit in what ever car you want whether it be a mighty boy or a LWB Hiace. Sorry for crude 20sec drawing but you'll get the idea.
