Thread: Why do my pictures get rotated when I post them?

Hi Banjo, just my 2c worth.
Cameras (including older phones) record their image in landscape - that's the way the sensor is located.
When you turn the camera on it's side (portrait) the sensor is also rotated. The image is recorded left-right instead of up-down.
Newer phones can detect if a photo is taken in landscape or portrait view and make allowances.

Easy fix is to down-load photos to your PC and do some editing in a basic photo viewer programme.
Rotate the photo so it is the right way up. Crop to focus interest on the subject. Adjust the contrast/saturation to improve the clarity.

Then export it as a .jpg of the correct size to show in forums.

My understanding is that phone photos are generally taken in portrait mode. That is with the phone held upright (narrow view), whilst turning it on its side is landscape (wide) view.
I have seen many strange distortions in videos and stills shot in landscape but displayed on screen in portrait mode,but until I joined this forum I had not experienced my (mostly) portrait shot stills show up rotated 90 degrees.
Yes agreed, re-jigging my photos on a pc would perhaps solve the orientation problem but not the cause itself. Perhaps the site’s admin/sysop could shed some light on it?

My experience: The forum*seems* to prefer Landscape photo's. If I crop my photo's into a Landscape, they seem to post correctly.

I use iPhone .

Here’s a picture taken in portrait left then landscape right. Post and pictures are loaded from my phone . And I did nothing to the pictures on my phone except load them all at a smaller than actual size 458KB.

Two same pictures but I re took the pictures as a screen shot .
The left pic I screen shot as a landscape. The right pic I screenshot as a portrait.

I always re take phone pics as screen shots before loading . And that puts them right way in forum .

Edit . It didn't work . Something should have been sideways. I either got it mixed up or this later phone iPhone 11 doesn't do what my older iPhone 8 used to do.

These two are the same picture taken as portrait but left is loaded actual size and right is the 458 KB option.

I give up. . I don't know whats going on in my above posts. Maybe add a few pics from your phone to give you a solution.

99 % of the time I load from computer these days. What has happened in the past is if I have loaded from the phone and its wrong I then screen shot it in portrait and re load the picture which corrects it.
Maybe I was taking a screen shot of them as landscapes before when there was a problem? Editing the size seems to leave them right way up.

Hi Rob, thank you for replying.
yes I’m using an iPhone 12 and I’ll put up two photos I took just now. The first is a portrait shot of a flat screen TV. No changes/edits to photo.

well that pretty much answers that!

This last one is a landscape of the same TV but modded into a portrait shape.

This looks now likeevery pic needs to be shot in landscape and modded as required. The meta data from the pic determines the outcome.

Looks like you’ve pretty much got it all worked out, yes phones need to be orientated the correct way for pics to upload directly without any manipulation. But if you rotate the pic via your phone, you also need to crop it slightly so it re-saves the metadata, just rotating it doesn’t change the metadata, hope this helps.

Using an Android phone I take photos in whatever orientation suits the subject then import those that are in portrait mode into an app that allows the image to be rotated. The image will appear in the correct orientation in the app, but if used as it is it will display incorrectly with the forum software unless it is below a certain size (can't recall what that is), well that was the case the last time I checked that. It seems like the forum software has/had a limit on the size file it will allocate resources to correct the image orientation.

Using the app I rotate the image 90deg one way then 90deg back the other way, which brings it 'upright' again and then save and upload to the forum. I don't need to do any cropping, just save it as it is. It's a pain having to do that, but it works.

Correct me if I'm wrong about any of that. If I am right about there still being that file size limit at which the forum software will do the rotation for you, it would be good for that to be recorded somewhere.
