    is it possible to get to the underside of the deck and remove the 2"x8"x16' support beam without dismantling the entire deck?

    Things like Acrow props come to mind to support the deck while the support beam is replaced

    Thats a great idea. I will have to look into that.
    I recently picked up a nice belt sander that I might end up doing the deck with.

    You're looking at this all wrong!

    The only reason to take on domestic improvements is to justify buying more gear.

    Why settle for a belt sander. Opportunity don't knock all that often!
