Well, I guess you can say the puddin' is proved Brad...

After you've put your luverly new toy through a few duty-cycles, I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on any strengths & weaknesses you discover. As you've shown, the 60 deg. single-iron set-up is capable of giving excellent results on cranky woods. My own experience has been that there are times when a single-iron 60* infill gave me better results than a well-tuned, finely-set double-iron (45*) setup, & times when it didn't. I have some vague theories about why, but I would rather not prejudice your own evaluations, so let's take up the discussion a year or so from now...
    Cheers,
    IW

I will not be available on the Forum for a while as I will be shopping for a towel to throw into the arena. I am hoping to reduce cost by getting a trade-in on the new tea towel previously bought for a now defunct purpose.

Well apparently you can’t have too many towels or tea towels, so I won’t try and discourage you from getting another one Paul . But there shouldn’t be any throwing of such said linen, while I may rate well on a couple of the judging criteria points, there are other points that I may not rate well on.
As far as I am concerned, everyone who finishes a plane will be a winner, and in with an equal chance of winning the greatest prize of IanW’s excellent package of fine tools.

    Cheers,
    Cheers Ian.
When I started on this journey, I automatically went with a 60* bed angle, because I wanted to get the best finish off the tool as possible, on the most cranky, hard, and difficult to work timbers. But part way into the build, I started to question why I didn’t go with 55*, because I have the HNT smoother, which is also single iron 60*. For some reason my infill plane handles that ringed Wattle better than my HNT, so I am glad I kept going on the 60* path.
I don’t yet know why it performs better, maybe the HNT needs to be sharpened better, or maybe because of the 3 thou mouth on mine, it’s preventing the tearout better. I am still yet to measure the clearance on the HNT, I should do that today. Or maybe it’s the extra weight of mine, and the handle might be giving extra downward force. I just don’t know yet.
I know I am not getting the best performance out of my Turner #4, I haven’t spent the time to fettle it probably, or learn to set the cap iron properly for best performance. But I can’t see it doing any better than what I got out of the infill plane, even in the right hands.
I sort of wish I had of used a different blade than the D2 one I had, one that’s easier to sharpen. But I wanted to use what I had on hand, as much as possible, and a few D2 irons were in the drawer waiting to be used.
I think this plane will only be bought out when the other planes can’t handle the tearout, so I probably won’t have to sharpen too often anyway.

    Brad

Your plane making skills are only surpassed by your eloquence and I think you have indeed captured the essence of the challenge. I have spent the morning so far on the internet so did not get to the shops. Lucky that. I will now go to the shed and ponder difficult matters.

Fantastic work, Brad. Now plane maker extraordinaire as well as a leading photographer of jumping spiders - definitely a talented man. Only thing missing from the photo lineup was a picture of your bottom - or maybe it was censored?

    Cheers, Gary

HI Gary, good to hear from you mate.
I have possibly got a few bottom photos that wouldn’t get through .
There was a few pics of the bottom of the sole after peening and cleaning up, but I don’t have any since the plane is at the finished end of the build.
I am going to take a few comparison pics, with other planes, to give people a better idea of size, I will also lay the plane over and get a pic of it’s bottom while I am at it.
Pix to come later this arvo

Here is the requested bottom shot
I set the blade flush with the sole, you can see the fine mouth.

I also measured the HNT, it was 15 thou, compared my 3 thou on this plane.
Maybe it could still be opened up a little. But I will leave it be for now.

Here are the comparison shots I promised.
My infill, HNT Smoother, and Turner #4 , which I believe is pretty much identical in size to a Stanley #4.
The handle and blade look a bit crooked in the photos, combination of the lens distortion of the widish angle lens, and the blade being pulled up so its not touching the floor and its not sitting straight.
I did think about retaking the photos, but decided not to bother

    Hi Brad
Congratulations, that’s a very fine looking and functioning plane.
    Very well done!

We can all stop now, surely the contest is over. I’m with Paul. I’m gonna get a towel...........but, then I’m gonna roll it up, put it on my noggin and use it as a thinking cap.

    Very best regards

    Pete.

That is indeed a fine looking result and worthy of a place on the podium (to the right and slightly below mine...).

Mr Authority, and The Rock have already been put forward. Any other suggestions ?
No one has stepped up and given the plane a definite name, so I'll go with Cklett's suggestion of "The Rock".
The plane feels rock solid when being put to use, so I feel it fits well.

I wanted to enter my "finished post" in the "finished thread" before the original deadline, but due to my spending all my time, away from home lately due to my Dads health, this didnt happen.
I am going to start on the post now, just have to decide on what pics to use.

Ironwood, that is a fantastic plane. Great we have an other over the finish line.

    I'd say The Rock rocks!
