I would like to have the 1:7 skew bevel already on the blade when I get it because It would be quite hard for me to do it at home. And I am guessing it would be easier to do when the tool steel is not hardened.

Once I have the proper tool steel, I'll make another prototype and hopefully I get the angles right
    Order it online here:

    O1 - Artisan Supplies

You can get it posted from Sydney or they will deliver to their shopfront in Preston and you can collect it from there, Covid permitting.

I would have to get a range of machinery to rip, dock and shape metal. One hobby at a time

You might be surprised at just how little amount of gear you need to make basic blades.

Having said that, it definitely can be the start of a very slippery and expensive slope.

Thank you for the link Doug3030. I think those tool steel blanks are unhardened. And I would need to shape them to my specific dimension and then harden and bake it. All at the same time not warping the blade and getting a convexed plane blade

I also don't want to light my mum's house on fire. If that happens, I would have to re-buy all my planes and tools

I reckon at this stage, I might just focus on wood working and order it through a metal worker from the forum.

My preference would be to teach people the necessary skills and knowledge rather than make the blade for them but I can understand your concerns regarding your circumstances.

If you wish to go that way I could make the blade for you.

    Provisos would be:

    - That it is not some complex thing that requires a master bladsmith to achieve

    - That you make the plane to fit the blade, not I make the blade to fit the plane

    - you would receive the blade hardened and tempered and ground at the requested angle but you would still need to sharpen it, as you would do to maintain it.

Probably best if you PM me to discuss it further if you wish to do it that way.

Doug, would this be another example of that slippery slope?

Hell no. Done in the cooperative spirit of this competition. I'm too busy with my own projects. I don't mind doing a little bit for others here and there, obviously but there is a limit to it. Like I said at the time:

As the old saying goes "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach him to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all weekend."

Steal a man’s wallet and he’ll be poor for a day, but teach him woodworking and how to buy tools and he’ll be poor for the rest of his life.

Poor financially, maybe; but richer in many other ways.

    Little update:

Been in contact with Doug about the plane blades. Have transferred him money and he will get it organised asap. Below are dimensions that the the blade will be in

In the mean time, I was messing around with a skew blade i have and did a quick attempt to make a skew rebate plane. Was fun but need to do more research on how to make a neater mortise diagonally thru the body. I managed to get 1 shaving from it . The Chinese bloke seems to just shove a drill in. Will have to give that a go next time. I was just playing around....

I will have to put this plane challenge on hold for now because Doug has to wait for the steel to arrive at his place, make it and then ship it to me. And with shipping times in Melbourne taking 10 days +. I'll start the initially planned dovetail plane when I do get the blades.

In the mean time, I got some timber delivered to my house for other stuff. And a friend's dad dropped a table off my house to restore. So these will keep me busy until stage 4 ends! Oh and I'm also restoring a #5.5 plane for a friend!

Bernard, the steel is in my possession.

Hopefully, the finished blades will be in the post on Monday.
