    Default Challenge 2020 - 2021 Bernard Zhang

I want to make a dovetail plane following thesetwo instructional videos. It cuts the male part of a sliding dovetail.
I will be following these two videos.

The plane has a sole of 1:7 with a fence of 1:7 too.

I will try make it in my shed, but I do not have any powertools. I might make one in my shed. And try make another one at the wood clubwhen stage 4 ends (end of October).

Once I have the planes made. I can try and make a slidingdovetail. I have the pair of HNT side rebate with a 1:7 dovetail plane forcutting the female side of a sliding dovetail.

I've found a plane blade and I ripped it in half.

I have small m6 bolts at home and I just need some square nuts. Have ordered that thru ebay. Not sure when it will arrive.

Found this piece of Ironbark. Was inspecting it today. I think plain sawn timber should work. I am just worried about the cracks in the timber.

Potentially will use this as the plane body

    Bernard,
    Welcome too the challenge,
I wouldn’t worry to much about only having hand tools,
You can do amazing things just simple tools.
Make sure to keep us posted!

    Cheers Matt.

Good to see a healthy Victorian contingent, or do we just have extra time on our hands?

Well I think the lockdown has been good for my health. I haven't had the slightest hint of a cold all winter. With Jools working from home instead of taking public transport to work, sitting on crowded trains breathing in all the germs the unwashed multitudes breathe out, neither of us have had any health issues throughout this time.
I got sick of sitting around doing nothing - so I took up meditation.

I had a bit of time today so i started working on the blade. Tool steel is hard to work and I may have to get a member from the forum to whip me up some blades. Hardened plane blades are too hard to shape

I first had to get the plane blade to rough shape. First attempt I snapped off more than I wanted to. Second attempt went a bit better.

I want to make a prototype first so I got a piece of pine and just went into it. I stuck with a bedding angle of 45 degrees.

    9.jpg4.jpg5.jpg6.jpg7.jpg8.jpg

Planed the sole of the wood to 1:7. Then I marked out where I need to cut for the plane blade.
Gave myself a groove for the saw to follow. Went okay. Had to clean the bed with some chisel work.

I cleaned that section out with a router plane and chisels. Forgot to take a photo of that step.

Then I started working on the plane blade. I used the same concept from Derek Cohen's website to make a custom angle of 1:7 for the plane blade.

Advanced Angles on the Lee Valley Honing Guide Mk II

It worked relatively good for the plane blade i had. The plane blade I have does not have parallel sides so it was pretty hard to have it properly registered like Derek does in his website. However I understand the concept and I did not have much to register from with the blade. I got reaaaaaaally close to a 1:7 ratio on the plane blade.

Took like 20 minutes to get the bevel shaped and sharpened.

Once I finished the blade to a rough 1:7 ratio. I think I needed a wedge. Did a realllly rough shaping of the wedge so that it held. Nothing scientific.

    1.jpg

After getting the wedge in, the plane blade didn't move, which is what i want. Then I tried to use it and the plane jammed up so quick. And then released I need an 'exhaust' for the plane shavings.
    2.jpg3.jpg7.JPG

I started off using a gouge chisel but then I used a drill because it was much faster. I then screwed in a temporary 1:7 fence with a washer in between for the blade to stick out.

OMG. So I was using it and then I realised I did the bevel the wrong way. hahaha OOPS.

    8.JPG9.jpg

Should have made plane tilt the other way. I've accidentally made a chamfering plane. Which is not what I am after.

It is all good though. I did not have much time in the shed today. Only about 4 hours. As opposed to 8 hours a day given I don't have assignments and classes.

    Learned a lot today.

I reckon it would best if I could get some tool steel made up by a member. Could you advise me who to contact to source this?

I would like to have the 1:7 skew bevel already on the blade when I get it because It would be quite hard for me to do it at home. And I am guessing it would be easier to do when the tool steel is not hardened.

Once I have the proper tool steel, I'll make another prototype and hopefully I get the angles right

Thank you for spending time and reading this!!
