While I am still not hundred percent set on the final shape at least I started to cut the pins.

Also dressed a.block of wood which I then will shape to get the bend side profiles to be matched against.

Some progress is still better than no progress.....

    Cklett.

I think a fluid design is an excellent idea, the then possibility’s are endless.[emoji6]

Maybe I should then make my plane from a non-Newtonian fluid. So it is liquidy in normal state and once it its the wood becomes rock hard and automatically adjusts it's shape to the workpiece?

There is a thought.... Let me just mix up the cornstarch [emoji12]

OmG, that was nerve-racking. I went tonight to bend my side profiles. As I could not find a good source on how people go about it I made it up as I went.
First I shaped my big block of wood to the curvature I wanted. Then I sort off made up a sheet metal bending roller type set-up / contraption.

That involved several blocks of scrap hardwood, clamps and whatever round stock of wood and metal I could find. With that I slowly bent and rolled the profiles by putting little bends along it's length. I was trying to mimic the mechanism of these rolling machines.

I think I got there, but not as nice as Ironwood managed. I think it's ok for my first time and I am glad I did not cut the profiles out yet. Probably wood have had bad kinks then.

    Cklett,

I think you have done pretty well, especially since you didn’t have a set of slip rollers, an not a lot of us do.
Using large rolling pins was a good idea.
I’m pretty sure Ian will pop up soon, and I’m pretty sure he uses a two piece bending form?
But remember generally when bending metal it’s reversible most times[emoji6].

    Cheers Matt.

There are probably better ways. I could slowley dial in. The other profile still needs some work, but this one sits probably as good as it gets.

For someone who's never bent and bashed metal before this challenge I think you've shown amazing ingenuity with good results

If the wooden former is hard enough AND you can FIRMLY clamp the two ends down you can beat the "corners" into round.

Alternatively... once it's all put together you can round them off on a linisher.
Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.

Hi, after I was happy with my cheeks I used my sophisticated carbon neutral sole flattening set up to prepare the sole piece. I used a piece of steel I got for $2, so it took some time to get it smooth.

Then cut the pins and started to shape the cheeks towards the target shape. Inbetween I use some card board engineering to check if my design is heading in the right way...

I can slowley see it coming together.

Looking very most excellent Picko, going carbon neutral, is that a point winning tactic, or just a political stance.

Also the solo flatting sandpaper was that the stuff from the big green bunnies shed, if so how did you feel the paper went?.

    Cheers Matt.

Thanks Matt, but I had no part in it. I haven't even set foot in Brissy for about 3 years.
