Not a political stance. More like being a cheap skate and rather use elbow grease than investing in precision ground steel ;-)

The paper is ok, but after this one sole it is quickly spent. Started with #40, then 60 and only up to 80. I should probably look for some more durable stuff.

I leave any political comment for when I need a major distraction from my plane. E.g. something horribly wrong. I will then break out a big controversy while I quietly fix my stuff up [emoji16]

Now that Sir, is just the kind of behaviour we would almost solemnly endorse hear,
Of course tho I would never be seen personally to 100 percent agree with said behaviour.

You have clearly missed your calling. You are a natural pollie!

I am now, as we speak, collating multiple digressions in anticipation of such a need.

I might need a diversion now. Shouldn't have talked about it [emoji6]

I finally peened the body together. Has quite some gaps. I think a rounded body is a bit harder for me. I did not have such a tight fit to begin with and so it was a lot of metal which needed to be moved. All in all it is what it is and will do the job.

I sanded all down and drilled the holes for the frog. That's where it went south. I measured them twice, but on one side the drill must have wandered. I had to file it out in order to line up.

Not sure how I will fix that, but I already have an idea.

On the plus side it already took a shaving. A very small shaving though.

At least I am confident it can work.

    CK,
I feel the pain, can you put a bigger pin in for the frog, would you also need to adjust the frog pin.
Could you use two larger tapped pins either side?.
    Just thinking out loud.

I think your aloud a few diversions now.

But on the plus side it’s working.

    Cheers Matt.

So a few small snags - wouldn't be much of a challenge if everything worked according to plan. I think it looks great so far. Always exciting (and a sigh of relief, too) to see a shaving.

Yep, that's right. It wouldn't be a challenge if it'd be easy and smooth sailing.

Spent some time to fix the pins. Here is what I came up with.

First I drilled a bigger 8mm hole in a piece of steel. I then positioned it where I wanted on the plane body and had everything in the vice. I used the 8mm hole as a file guide so the bigger hole in the plane body would be as round as possible. It worked great because the brass is much softer then the steel so I could feel easily where I needed to take more brass off or have already filed to the steel in the guide and stop there.

I did it that way because I also had to offset the center of the hole and therefore couldn't just drill it. Some sandpaper around a smaller drill bit in the drill then did the rest to make the new hole round.

Then I made new pins from some M6 bolts. Means I did not need to change the threads in the frog.

For that I first filed the head nearly round in the vice and did the rest of bringing to size in my highly sophisticated mobile lathe [emoji6]

And now I have this fixed I believe. And I think the bigger pin head suits better to the stout plane body.

I wondered how you were going to fix that. Good work.

    Cklett,
In the spirt of sports man ship and being a true gentleman, I feel you should go back and delete all references to an issue that we would all forget by tomorrow anyway,
By tomorrow speaking for my self at least I would be seeing two lovely M6 bolts that have always been there[emoji6].
Gerorge of 1984 fame would be so proud.

By the way brilliant idea with the steel guide bar.

    Cheers Matt.

In the meantime I also knocked up a thumb screw for the lever cap and a frog adjustment nut.

I used a knurled brass door knob from the BGS and stainless steel bolt.

The knob had a half round notch it it. I cut a piece from the bottom to make the adjustment nut and just the top part for the thumb screw.

That is 95% of the metal work done. Some refinement here and there. Off to the woodwork again. Next is the rear handle.

    Matt

After nicknaming your plane "The Body," and perpetuating the theme above, CK's plane would have to be "Model 2012."

Perhaps we should find a nickname for everybody's plane. That could be a secondary challenge.

How about, "The Phantom", followed by a number as there are a few difficult to locate projects?

I was discussing the naming of the plane with SWMBO and mentioned how Matt's plane was called "The Body," at which point she rolled her eyes and mumbled something about "a boy thing." She then asked about Model 2012. I had to explain that. I then realised that the significance might not be immediately apparent.

So what is it? I should also point out that she called into question whether I was right. Any ideas anybody?
