Is it going to be a low angle plane or a high angle like the HNT versions? I think the long tang (sounds like a memorable Aussie battle in WW2) enables you to chose either. I have only ever attempted a high angle all timber plane, but the bevel up low angle examples are most appealing.

Hi Paul, to be honest I had not really given it much thought, however now that you've forced me to make that decision, I think I'll attempt a low angle one as it will be used across end grain. This is of course cognisant of Ian's oft shared advice that the lower the angle, the more precise it all needs to be.

I think you have also named my creation. It shall be called "the plane of long tang"

I’m eagerly awaiting too see The Plane of long Tang.

So we have another Metal head here immmm.

The battle of Long Tan took place in Vietnam in 1966. The Battle of Long Tan | Army.gov.au

Ooops. Wrong war!! What was I thinking? I have always wanted to watch the film, but never have. Hence my mistake.

The film is quite good, but as a soldier watching it I had to make a lot of allowance for things that were portrayed somewhat differently for the camera to how they would have been in real life, but that did not alter the historical facts of the battle. I was too young for Vietnam and Long Tan on 17 August 1966 would have not been the place to be.

When I was at school we had an American kid who was in our tennis team. At age seventeen there was no way he was going back to the States as he would have been drafted in a flash.

In 1980 when I arrived in Australia the Falklands war errupted soon after (Doug will correct me if I am too far out with the dates ) and people asked me whether I would get dragged back to pomy land, but at 32 years (I guess the war was 1982) I was already too old for a first wave of conscription.

However, we digress, and i like the sound of the "Plane of Long Tang." It has a defiant, challenging tone to it.
