    Default Challenge 2020 -2021 MountainAsh

I may have an unfair advantage. I just got a copy of Garrett Hack's "The Handplane Book" yesterday and I am absorbing as much as I can. You have all been warned .

Ummm, are we still allowed to get advice from the judges?

As long as you don't actually get Garrett to make the plane I don't see a problem. Game on!
I got sick of sitting around doing nothing - so I took up meditation.

Haha I’ve had that book for years.

    Cheers Matt.

Mountain Ash, what do you actually mean by challenge 2020-2021?

Are you challenging us or propose a challenge of some sort? I think you need to be more specific here.

But I am open for anything...

Okay. At this stage I am thinking of a wooden (of course!) chamfering plane. I must admit that this has been on the to do list for a while but still trying to work through the complexities of the adjustable mechanism. I was going to make it one size only but that doesn't seem good enough now there is an official challenge established .

    MA

Are you doing that by the ingestion method? I am afraid the digested product may end up a little, well, s**t*y!

    Regards
    Paul

PS: A chamfer plane is a good project and quite unusual. You may wish to look at this thread.

Hi all. After a token amount of research, much procrastination and a small amount of self doubt I have begun actually doing something about my plane. Blade/chip breaker chosen and blanks glued together and I have proof - see below

    Looking like progress M.A

I personally think we should be awarded more more points for Procrastination.

Will the glue line be a feature or it is being removed eventually?.

    Cheers Matt.

Hi Matt. Probably both. I don't have any beech thick enough to make the plane out of a single piece, with the grain oriented correctly. I have used laminated billets with 3 other planes and they seem fine. The chamfer base will cut out a big chunk too.

Hi all. Some progress today. Beech billet has been cut to height, length and width. Ends squared and four faces dressed square and parallel. Bed angle marked out and throat drilled ready for finishing off with chisel. Lamination appears to somewhat blend in, chamfered edges will help disguise. If only I had a chamfer plane to cut them...
