It passed the file test so it hardened successfully.

Since Doug's post it has taken Australian Post 18 days 21 hours and 56 minutes to deliver my blade a total of 47.4Km Well at least they didn't loose it! Here's the proof -

The dimensions are 134mm x 38mm x 6.25mm.

Within half an our of receiving the blade, Matt (Simplicity) and his delightful wife (Sally) called in and we reviewed my mock up (see post #95) and the decisions I have made to move forward to the final build:

1. Overall height of the laminated body to be increased from 40mm to 50mm
2. 60 degree ramp in front of the blade to be radiused to provide more room for chip removal and positioning of the wedge and pin
3. Width of the plane body to be 57mm (8mm cheek, 1.5mm gap between cheek and blade, 38mm blade, 1.5mm gap between cheek and blade, 8mm cheek)
4. Tote to be moved forward bringing it closer to the blade.
5. Wedge pin to be 9mm diameter rather than 12mm

All that is required now is for a few days of good shed weather and my neck and shoulder to behave and the job should be done before Christmas - COVID- 19 permitting.

Nothing suss there; just like when the Ferrari pit crew pop round to the McLaren pits for a chinwag and a brew...

I agree the handle needs to be brought forwards for balance; but have you considered making it a razee style? That way you can bring the handle even further forwards and closer to the centre of gravity.

Great to see that you now have everything you need now to kick off in earnest, and top marks to Doug for helping out. If the judges are awarding altruistic bonus points then both he and Bushmiller deserve them for the physical assistance they have provided to other contestants.

My son ordered some socks and a pair of sneakers from the same store at the same time and with the same transaction. Sneakers came in about 2 weeks (from the UK!), socks took over 6 weeks (from Sydney.....as in capital of NSW, Sydney).

Have had discussion this morning with GP about my neck/shoulder problem which has prevented me from enjoying any shed time in the last 2 weeks. I will see the specialist again next week and hope to have the CT scan and steroid injection before Christmas.

The last injection worked wonders for about 18 months, so here's hoping. Unfortunately there is at least 1 months rest time after the injection before I can hope to get back to the plane - but that would still leave enough time to get it finished before the completion date. - won't it?

Hope you get well soon. I do think that here should be consideration for a medical extension to the deadline, should it be required to allow you to complete your plane challenge entry.

Matt (Simplicity) rang me last night with the suggestion that we consider extending the time for us slow coaches to finish out planes. My first thought was 'that would not necessarily help me' – the steroid injection has not been successful and I am waiting for an appointment with a neurosurgeon to discuss my options for further treatment.

As Matt pointed out, things have been very quiet since the corona virus restrictions were eased and we were able to get back to some semblance of ‘normality’ allowing us to resume our involvement with family and friends in group activities. For many, work activities have resumed with many returning to a more normal working life rather than being confined to home. One way or another our ‘free time’, available for home workshop activities, has been significantly reduced.

I wonder whether some are also finding it a bit more difficult that first anticipated and are finding that we need more time to upgrade our skills before we can complete essential tasks – e.g some of the “metal work group” appear to have been spending a lot of time practicing the peening skills required for perfecting their dovetails. The results published to date show that this has been time well spent and I congratulate them on the standard which they have set.

From the beginning, we have said that this is a challenge not a competition - a challenge for each of us to push the boundaries of our comfort zone and to complete our personal challenge to make a working plane. Matt had set the bar with his first plane made last year and there is definitely a competitive side for us to do better than Matt. In respect of the competitive component of the challenge it is probably realistic to continue with the time limit which was originally set at close to 200 days and is due to end on 28th March 2020.

With that preamble, we have a couple of questions:
1. Do we need to extend the deadline for planes to be completed and submitted for judging?
2. Is there a need to maybe relax the “competitive rules” and allow members to seek assistance when they run in to the brick wall of their skill set – e.g. seeking assistance of another member to complete a specific task?

We would appreciate your comments and suggestions and if appropriate an indication of the sort of assistance which you feel would be required to ensure that we all successfully complete our personal challenge.

I seem to recall that back at the start it was said somewhere that no time extension requests would be entertained. I might be wrong about that, but I don't have time to look right now. I'm too busy trying to build a plane before the deadline.

As the challenge has developed over the time it is very obvious that the emphasis is more on sharing knowledge and cooperating. People have been generous with their knowledge and also generous with acknowledging the efforts and assistance of others. As long as the maker does the majority of the work themselves and gives due credit to the provider of assistance I see no real problems there.

1. While I would agree that a time extension should be allowed if a majority agree, my vote should be disqualified since I'm already finished and submitted for judging.

2. So long as any collaboration with others is documented and credited, I think that would be perfectly acceptable.

I fully agree with the posts before. On top the summer heat doesn't make it easier for some. I am still confident to finish my plane in time but wouldn't mind to have a little more to refine and also enjoy it more with less pressure.

On top I would like to share a plan I came up with the last days. This is such a great experience and with the permission of everyone I would like to take all the finished entries at the end and turn it into a book. A photo book which showcases all the planes we made with your 200 word descriptions and garnished with some highlights and puns of the journey.

I will donate a copy for free for the winner and for the rest to obtain copies for the costs of printing and postage.

I think that will be great to document what we achieved.

Hopefully you guys are ok with that and maybe gives extra motivation to get as many planes finished by whatever deadline will be decided as possible.

You are correct Doug, I did make that comment. However, Matt has suggested that the impact of Covid restrictions and the reduced activity on the forum over the past couple of months, that maybe we need to review the rules.
