Well now I'll have to go and search for the Veritas one and see if my thoughts are along the same lines.

Well, you might just have easily thunked it up yourself, it's a pretty obvious solution to a problem when you think about it, so just ell their patent lawyers to buzz-off if they come a-calling.

It's interesting how Veritas thought they needed a do-dad at front & rear of their plane - I guess it does make it easier to hang onto the beast. I just slavishly copied an old infill I liked (by G. Miller of London who operated roughly from 1890 to 1910). JW lge.jpg

The screw adjuster is my addition, I've not seen a Miller with a screw adjuster, and it's pretty unlikely he ever used one since he faded out about the time Norris introduced his. Most of the old infill shoulder planes had very little in the way of knobs or lumps to hang onto, but Miller sometimes included a "rhino horn" on his - a horn-like protuberance sticking up from the centre of the woodwork at the top. The thumbscrew for the lever-wedge sort of fills the same function on mine.

All things said, I find my copy pretty easy to handle in most situations, but I'll admit there are times when it would be nice to have something extra to get a finger behind to give me a more secure grasp of things, so go the front knob, I say...

Oh well, at least I have a go-er because it's taken it's first shavings.

I was thinking just a simple thru bolt with a head slimmer than the brass sides (3mm) and maybe just a screwdriver slot. Or the head could be plain and the slot could be in the nut, similar to the front knob on most planes.
