Well there is still time and at the moment it is good to have work.

Back to your plane. Every time I think I know where you are going or how the end result might look like, you throw in a new detail I did not expect. And it becomes more and more interesting.

    I love it.

Well it’s about time you Victorians started pulling your weight, the government has got some big bills to pay you know

The plane is coming along nicely, you will just have to make time on your days off to work on it now, like the rest of us

I see you are going with an infill at the back , I was thinking you were going for the Stanley look, with just a plain tote .

Don’t know about days off, I’ve just had a few of them, lol.

Yes the plan on the rear is to place the Tote on top of a small stuffing,
Tho I’m still thinking about bolting the Tote on from below, tho that could be going a bit beyond just the usual over engineering principles.
    I sleep on that one.

    Cheers Matt.

    Ah rightyo, now I gotcha
Oh well, there’s always time after work then, just have to put some of the other chores on hold for a while.

Slow down you blokes, I'm playing catch up. Do you know how much stuff (predominately weeds) grows in seven weeks. I did sneak into the shed this-arvo thou. Looking good Matt.

If your easily bored by me, skip to the pretty pictures now.
    My plane build so far
    I have in point form.
I hate chocolate and got fatter
I cut some steel up, then had a think
    I butchered some brass,
    Filled some brass
Cut some shapes that look like a certain birds rear end.
    Ate more crap food.
Did some more filling of metal,
Put a slot in a piece of metal(mouth)
Put three pieces of metal on a piece of wood, and bashed it with hammer.
The cried because my arm was sore.
    Had a drink.
Filed more metal, listening to heavy metal.
    Than filed some more.
Cut some Forest Red Gum up , then threw it out the door because the saw cut it wrong.
Then did some other stuff ,but my attention span has crashed ,lol.
Then got told to close the fridge, your bored.

Short version of the too do list poo load heaps to go.

So my build will possibly be on a go slow movement, while I do some paying work for a bit.

    But I’m getting there.

    Cheers Matt.
I’ve also requested a table cloth change,my Dennist thinks I should recover “ok”
It was nice to get back to work as well And nice to see the infills, they are still the Red gum yeah? And nice to see the star of the show........TC!

It is nice to be back at work, well sort of,I do miss my mornings sleeping in, the granny naps sometimes.
But my clients seemed happy to see me,(through a glass window lol).

Paul’s special Forest Red Gum , I think is going to come up a treat.

    Cheers Matt.

    Matt

It is good you are able to return fully to work. I will be most interested to see how your plane comes up for a number of reasons. It is looking "promising" to put it euphemistically.

Paul, is the "Forest Red Gum" different to the red gum I know of (as in the house stumps and good firewood variety)? Matts certainly looks browner and with different grain than I've seen.

Forest Red Gum ( sometimes called Blue Gum up in QLD just to add to the confusion) is E. tereticornis while River Red Gum is E. camaldulensis. There is also Blakely's Red Gum, E. blakelyi. Your house stumps are likely River Red Gum. River Red Gum is found in every state in Australia and is a very spreading tree that can withstand inundation from flooding for long periods. Forest Red Gum has a much longer trunk before the first branches. In wood working it can be very variable and sometimes challenging to work. Matt was, despite this, quite keen to try some. It is a heavier denser timber than River Red Gum which is no slouch in the density stakes itself.

I agree with all Paul said. And I'll add that most of the RRG I've come across was far better to work than any of the Qld. FRG (E. tereticornis) I've struck. Some RRG I've had has been quite pleasant to work with, while most FRG has been as hard as nails and the most difficult wood to plane I've ever had the misforune to meet; worse than Gidgee & Acacia rhodoxylon (aka "Western Rosewood) which are even harder & denser, but plane better & don't rip the edge off a blade as quickly. RRG also has a somewhat finer grain than FRG and takes a better finish.

However, there is great variation within every species and Matt's lump of FRG may make a liar of me and work up very nicely. I hope for his sake it does.......

    Cheers,
    IW

    Cheers,
Matt’s lump of FRG Well some of it, is bloody hard chips by just thinking it’s gone to chip and your not even touching it.

But treaded like a piece of 01 Tool steel files very nicely.
I’m praying too all 2500 deities for Devine forgiveness off some of my sins.

That it will come up nicely once I get to the finishing stage(still undecided there as well)

    Cheers Matt.

Thanks Paul and Ian. I recently replaced a tote and knob with some really nice RRG that had fiddleback grain running through it. Looks great on the tote but disappears on the turned knob. It was a pleasure to plane , particularly with my recently tuned up block plane (lockdown has been good for working through the to do list). I also made a matching set for another plane with what I think is Jarrah (they were old stair treads for a deck). Almost purple when cut and again the difference between the tote and knob is quite obvious, it feels like my matching set is not so matching

Some big ,small changes to the body, but due to us Victorians now ,deciding we really should contribute back into the economy ,a little slow in Neils shed for me and the body in the last few weeks.

Well ,the body accidentally gained about 1 mm across the width,I had not noticed till I started fitting and fiddling with my blade backing board, chatter block, I couldn’t figure out why it was not sitting in square to the sides,
Then the dollar coin dropped (penny [emoji17])
The sides had come in at the top by about a smidgen that’s a funny metric thing.
My internal side to side measurement should have been 52 mm, I’m now 53 mm internally .
Hopefully the three esteemed gentlemen will be impressed by my openness and honesty and will see past my little tiny not really big issue.
So not having any more access to 20 ton pushing or pulling equipment I used a nut and bolt to push the sides out to square , sorry I forgot to take shame pictures.(like if I would)
This meant now my previous backing board know longer fitted,
So ,plan 29 section 8 of the amendment
I made a new one, well actually I’m in the process of making a new one.
It’s kind of looking like a forgotten tombstone at a country graveyard, but I think eventually it will fit in and look good.

    Cheers Matt.
