A little more progress on "The Anti-Body:" The rear infill has been glued in place and shaped all but for a final touch up. A few more brass rivets have been inserted for the rear infill.

The front infill has been roughly cut to shape and the front bun is made up. I stuck it on top loosely for effect, but the grain will go in the other direction.

The "drainage" hole has been welded and filed almost flat. Final flattening will be done in conjunction with the sole.

The rear handle is rough shaped using rasps and still has to be mated to the infill. In the end i developed the shape more along the lines of a saw handle: I really didn't like the simple round shape of the pine mock up posted earlier.

There is still a mile of sanding ahead for the handle. I think this timber used for the handle is Bull oak as it certainly gave the rasps a work out.

The Antibody has gone for a streamlined Art Deco look,do you mind explaining your reasonings Paul, or just make something up, some of us hear are quite gullible and would probably believe anything you wrote anyway.

That looks really good. I really like the handle. I have not seen a closed handle on a low angle plane. I think that's a first. Really nice!

While I would like to point to a devious plan designed to target the sympathies of the judges, I have to tell you that no such dastardly plan exists: In fact almost anything on "The Anti-Body" only exists because that is what I had to hand. I quite like the idea of a "go-faster" plane that is quicker to use, but I doubt that will convert to reality.The speed at which I work does not benefit from any aerodynamics.

I did mention a while back that I was fighting shy of the post style handle as I have had those break on me. The problem is that infill planes use the front of the handle as the bed for the plane, which is fine when it is 50° to 60°. The 12° bed of a low angle prohibits this, which is why the rear handle on such planes is normally a post style. If this was a smoother or a jack plane the handle would have to be a post as there is no room for an enclosed handle, but the extra length of this one at 464mm (I measured it so I could be precise) permits a modified enclosed handle with a recess in the infills to operate the blade adjuster. Although I took the basic pattern from a handsaw handle, I had to modify the sweep of that top horn. The handle is now quite comfortable, for something that has the texture of crocodile skin , but will be quite acceptable once sanded smooth.

I think to be truly art deco there would have to be more angular shaping involved (I think the Empire State building is the largest example of art deco). The Anti-Body has incorporated too many curves in a futile attempt to compete with EWMBO (Elle Who Must Be Obeyed ).

I am reluctant to confuse "The Body" further but Elle has an ancestral connection to "The Body" and is also the French for "She": Hence EWMBO. My "Anti-Body" is quaking in her boots at the prospect of being confronted by "The Body."

This thread gives me an appreciation for the enormous (endless?) work and skill needed to bring a plane to life.

It's daunting.

I think the time taken, in my case anyway, is inversely proportional to the amount of skill I can summon. I estimate it will take for ever plus a fudge factor approximating to another 10%!

Having said that, it is starting to look a little like a plane and I have ploughed ahead with the infills, but before I get to that I did a little work on the brass mouth.

There are two steel inserts with an internal thread, which I still have to glue in place

The brass mouth is removable (not really "adjustable" as Matt suggested a long way back in this thread) and will allow me potentially to have two fine mouths and one very coarse mouth suitable for a scrub blade. The machine screws sit down in the countersink and have to be slightly shortened. A small amount of timber has been removed from this area with a router and chisel as the brass is just slightly thicker than the steel sole of the channel. Final mating of the two surfaces with be done with a combination of a file and the sole flattening process.

Really I probably should not be doing the varnishing yet, but in my defence my dirty hands kept marking the timber so I justified some finish to prevent this.

The metal parts on the inside of the plane will be black so they will be prepared tomorrow: Maybe.

I am REALLY liking the woodwork!

If you find the rivnuts don’t hold well when you glue them in I have some expanding inserts that definitely will; they’ll be a bigger diameter only by a bee’s winky.

This is stunning. It'll be one unique plane.

When you first mentioned your plane challenge was going to be using a piece of Steel Angle, I had reservations, you have turned a piece of junk steel into something even the “Body” might have second glance at, you may from this day forward remind me of the day I was wrong(Don’t abuse it [emoji6])
The Antibody is looking exceptionally like a very nice plane body.

You cannot allow The Body and The Anti-Body to ever meet; it would be catastrophically cataclysmic! What happens when matter and anti-matter meet? Instant obliteration of both!!!
Any two things that are equal and opposite will cancel each other out; potentially violently! We simply dare not risk this!!!
