Aw, Shucks!! Can't they even have a little platonic peep?
"The Anti-Body" is getting all fancied up just in case.... I put the components together with the exception of the brass mouth

Still quite a bit of tidying up, polishing, flattening, painting and varnishing to do. Later this week I am hoping to heat treat the blades.

I was waiting for somebody to mention that, because it is the crux of the matter. Doesn't matter how appealing it may be if it can't deliver the required shaving.
I remember a story about judging of cattle at an agricultural show. A group of children were judging some cows. One of the audience was heard to say,
"Don't presume to tell me how good a cow is unless you have your hand up her ."
For those of you unfamiliar with the rectal palpation method, it is how cows were pregnancy tested. The foetus is "bounced" by inserting the left arm into the anus and feeling for the foetus through the anal wall. Perhaps today they use an infra red camera or some other techno device.
The point of this rather graphic depiction is to emphasise I have not yet addressed the most crucial part of the plane and in truth it is the most worrying aspect for me.

Um, just a very small correction, Paul - one usually uses one's dominant hand for rectal palpation in cattle, it's quite a sensitive process because apart from "preg testing", it's used to check the status of ovaries when cows are being artificially inseminated & to look for gross internal problems like twisted bowel, so you use your "best" hand. Some used to recommend using the other hand with horses because they are more skittish & there is a bigger risk of injuries. Better not to have your good arm in a sling. Nowadays, they use long gloves, but in the beginning it was done bare-armed. You just whistled "Greensleeves" whilst working.
Reminds me that when I was in my final year at vet school, I examined a house cow belonging to a neighbor & pronounced her 'empty'. Said cow (rather perversely) delivered a healthy, bouncing calf a couple of months later. I'm still reminded of my mistake with much hilarity by everyone who knows the story (which is at least half the town), whenever I visit the rellies. I did improve my score with a bit more practice, but might help explain why I decided to specialise in pathology - at least I could see what I was doing.
A totally unnecessary diversion, but you did bring the subject up..
Now, back to business - yep, agreed, beautiful body (or anti-body) notwithstanding, it has to deliver those shavings to be eligible.....
Cheers,IW

I am very reluctant to question this having regard to your profession before you became a plane maker. However I was advised specifically to use the left arm. I think the primary reason was to be able to detect the "thrill." As you would know, but I feel obliged to explain for those non agricultural types who may be letting their imagination run amuck, there is a vein inside the cow's rear end (the Forum won't let me use the "A" word ) that becomes prominent when the foetus reaches about six months and allows more precise assessment of how far in calf the animal is. The "thrill" is the pulsing of blood in this vein that is only on the right side of the animal. Actually I suspect there is another on the other side but it does not become prominent: This is now well beyond my level of understanding.
However, I rarely indulge in such practices nowadays. Back to plane making.

Bushmiller,
I can't help noticing the Anti-Body is sitting on a case which says engraver on it. Is that a hint what's coming next?
