Default Cubism Competirion 2022 - RGP

    Hi,
May as well enter give me something to concentrate on. I have a couple of old draws & a small piece of old door all Coachwood. There should be enough to make a box for the 250mm cube. Design still in the grey matter. I did do a small box for the last Melany wood show comp but the show got canned. Ill start from scratch.

Sounds like we have some serious competition for the box makers. Haven't used coachwood - what is it like to work with?

    Default Coachwood

Before the introduction of Meranti here in Australia most cabinet makers used locally grown rainforest timbers such as Hoop Pine, QLD Maple, Silky Oak & Coachwood. ( post Red Cedar days).
Coachwood has a mild laundry soap powder smell when worked, very nice grain pattern & a greyish brown finished colour. Not an oily wood, it glues up nicely, not prone to splitting when worked & it planes down to a very smooth finish without having to sand a lot.

This is an example a box I have made previousley.
    Cheers.

Well I soon realized I need to go a bit bigger with my box. I'm staying with the same design just bigger scale. Lucky I have lots of reclaimed Coachwood, not as good as the spalted piece with nail holes in it.

Underway, good way to keep inside on a cold day. in the workshop cutting dovetails, not just any dovetail these are "London Dovetails" or commonly mitered dovetails. Even though the recycled timber I am using won't be grain matched I think this type of dovetail looks good on any small box. Hand cut dovetails the miters are 1/2 chisel cut & miter saw cut. Note dry fit only at this stage. Top of the lid is glues & 1 coat of wipe on poly to seal it.

Gluing up the main box case, lid is not glued at this stage just using the lid mortice to keep the sides in place.

Messy workspace, never enough room in the workshop. the workbench is the disaster area. Note I have a proper woodwork bench with woodworking vice attached in my garage but no room in the workshop for it to fit.

I have given the bottom a slight curve with a pattern router bit, also one coat of wipe on poly to seal the wood & show up the defects. Next step I will cut the glued joint to form the lid, I use a 1.6mm cutter & bearing on the router bench then glue on the top.

I cut around the glue line to remove the lid frame from the base of the box. sorry I didn't take photo I used a 1.6mm slot cutter on the router table. Then I glued the lid together, fitted some 2nd hand brass hinges. When the lid is closed the sides appear flush all around even though there is a bit of wood missing.

Coming along nicely; you might have yours finished before I’ve cut the first joint on mine !

Working on the removeable tray. Yes I have made a measuring mistake with the middle divider after doing a very nice circle etc it was too high!!!
It ended up 4mm higher than my calculation. I had to cut it. Next update you will see the fix.

Very distracted doing other projects has over run the momentum. here's an update.

I had to cut the top of the tray & fitted a small Blackbean handle.

    Here'sCubism 2022 36.jpgCubism 2022 40.jpg where it is now.

    Still going foward though.

I have been on a commission job for a few weeks but here's the latest all hardware fitted just needs a finish applied to make it look all shiny.

    Cubisn 2022 44.jpgCubisn 2022 43.jpgCubisn 2022 46.jpgCubisn 2022 45.jpgCubisn 2022 42.jpg

I can assure you this hasn't been an easy job, quite a few alterations were needed to get it all fitting together. I don't use any plans, I let the size of a bit of wood to determine the final shape & dimensions. If you keep to a plan the wood is either not big enough or you end up with too many good off cuts.
