The judges of the Cubism Competition met up to review progress by the participants with a view to awarding the first of the Intermediate Progress prizes. We would like to commend the participants on the generally high quality of construction, the good progress and the reporting made in the individual threads.

The range of work submitted has been diverse, but that makes it all the more interesting, albeit a little more challenging for the judges! There were quite a few contenders for this prize, and we thought the better entries so far exhibited the following features:

The overall design had a coherency and clear target in mind - even if it varied a bit over time
The posts told a story or voyage - including side voyages which often happens with these sorts of projects
Detailed photos showing finish and features.
    Quality of finish
    Overall progress
General engagement with posted responses to competitors posts.

We also thought it important to acknowledge certain constraints participants may be experiencing and a few other pointers:

    1. We realise most of the participants often have many other things to do in life, such as full time employment, and a whole host of other commitments. So those who have been unable to make as much progress as they would have wished can easily reignite their entry in the next period. There is still plenty of time left for the second Intermediate Progress prize. We emphasise that you should post as many steps and details as you can. Even seemingly trivial things can often help a newbie or raise interest from other more experienced members of the Forum.

As you may have gathered, this competition while fundamentally a bit of fun, is also educational.

    2. It would be helpful to the judges if you were to clearly post somewhere in your thread the overall dimensions (L/W/H) of your entry and nominate which of the two sections of the competition in which you would like your entry to be included.

    These are

To fit into a cube of side length 500mm

    OR

To fit into a cube of side length 250mm

Bear in mind a longer narrow object may fit into the cube diagonally.

    3. Once you have finished or are close to finished, a reflection post summarising aspects such as, what you learned, how your final design compared to your original thoughts, how you might do things if you were to repeat the process and probably a whole host of other aspects should be made.

    4. Close up pictures showing details of your work certainly helps the judges (just saying).

Now, the moment for which you have been waiting: The final choice was extremely difficult, but the good news for Hughie is that he has been awarded the first Intermediate Prize based on the criteria identified above. The bad news for Hughie is that this makes him ineligible for the second Intermediate Prize. So the judges will be contacting him by PM so he can receive his prize of a rather special turned timber pen.

    Well done Hughie.

Lastly, we should emphasise that winning one of the Intermediate prizes is not to be seen as a pointer for the ultimate winners: It is very much a progress prize. Thank you to all of you who have entered so far and thanks in advance for those of you who still have to enter: Just do it.

    Regards
    Paul

Well guys, seriously I’ve seen more excitement from a Corpse.

Getting you lot motivated is like trying to drag a Dead horse through parliament.

Default 2 weeks to closing time

We have 2 weeks left to put in our final presentation. It might be a good idea for someone to create the "Ready for judging" thread this week so we have plenty of time to post entries and edit them if necessary.

I know the level of activity has been slower than expected, I just hope the judges haven't gone to sleep!
    Cheers, Bob the labrat

Thanks Bob for the reminder: It is taken in the gentle way it has been offered. Life's trials and tribulations have impacted the judges with BobL's personal and tragic loss, Simplicity's move to the sticks and my...eh actually I don't have any extenuating circumstances.

So please forgive us and we will try to redress the situation. In fact we have to select a recipient for the second intermediary prize as well as creating the "Ready for Judging " thread.

Stick with us and look out for the new thread. In fact it is a timely reminder for the participants to gather up their pix and present a story for the new thread.

27 November is bearing down on us quick fast,

As Paul pointed out in an earlier post, I have recently moved from being a suburban kid too,a Country lad.
This was around the 30 September just before all the floods hit,we were not directly hit by the floods luckily tho, but we’re stranded in our new home for a few days, watching our Driveway head for our dam.

It has been an interesting year on the Forum, as many may have noticed participation as been down significantly, in private messages Neil as shared some of the figures, an it shows a sad situation.
There is probably many an variety of reasons for this including no doubt the times we are living in.

I initially spurred the idea of this competition in an attempt to spruce things up a bit, especially after we had all endured Covid-19’s an all the crap it brought with it.

Even tho numbers were well down on what we had initially hoped for, I would like too thank firstly the other Two judges an Neil for sticking it through, unfortunately as many know Bobs wife suddenly past away just recently, so Paul an myself have no expectations of Bob contributing further to the Judging of the competition, tho he his welcomed too if he feels he would like too.
I would also like too congratulate those competitors who stuck with it, an will soon be Judged for the efforts, well done.

But none the less I have been keeping an eye on what you the competitors have been up too more or less,an the standard has been fantastic, calling a winner will not be an easy task, an no doubt Paul an myself will have a few late night chats.

I would also finally just like to apologise for what may seem a lack of interest in the competition an the forum in general, from self, in truth I’ve just been slack an bit pre occupied with endeavours in my private life.

But with all that said an done, we still have a fantastic community here , that I hope too be a part of for awhile yet.

    Cheers Matt.

    Default Interim prize winner

There are only two more days to complete your entry to the cubism competition so I would urge those that have not entered their submission into the "Ready for Judging" thread to do so.

There is also another issue and that is the one of the interim prize. Other issues already outlined in the delay for awarding this have been compounded by another problem. The judges got together early Sunday morning and chose the most outstanding competitor based on a number of factors including complexity, execution of the project, description of the journey, pictoral and descriptive comment to name a few criteria and a winner was chosen. Before this result could be posted, and this was delayed by the onset of a gargantuan toothache, the selected recipient of the interim prize announced he was regrettably withdrawing from the competition because of other commitments at home.

So, what to do? The judges have decided that despite this, to still award the interim prize to CKlett as there is no denying he put an enormous amount of energy into the project and if we had posted just a few hours earlier his name would have come up in lights anyway.

Congratulations CK and please send you postal address details to esteemed judge Simplicity in a a PM to receive your prize of a delightful, handcrafted pen by CraftySally. The only request we make is that you show the completed project at some point in the future as time permits.

For the rest of you, the field has of course narrowed and we ask you to complete your "Ready for Judging" thread.

    Regards
    Paul

Default Winners of the Cubism Competition

The time has come for the judges to announce the winners. There were six entries submitted to the Ready for Judging thread as at least a couple of contestants had to withdraw through lack of time. We understand this and to some extent it is almost certainly because we are no longer under Covid restrictions with time on our hands. That in itself is a good thing.
    The contestants were:

    CRaatz
    derekcohen
    Hughie
    Labr@
    RGP
    shanesmith80

With only six entries, a person could be forgiven for thinking it was an easy task. That was not the case. All the entries were of a high standard, deserving of a mention, and we had to nitpick to come up with the winners. We took into account several factors:

    They included:

    Difficulty factor of the project
    Quality of the build
Variety of techniques used to complete the project
    Imagination level
    Description of the work
    Pictorial journey.

    First Prize: HUGHIE. "Vortex."

Although we called the competition "Cubism," this was really only to regulate the size and it was not intended to imply the contestants should build a box. Hughie with his entry certainly stepped outside the cube. It involved a number of disciplines incuding woodturning, hollowing and carving to produce an amazing vase/urn that was then minimalised. In fact it was already small, but as the wood was gradually removed it stood out as a clear winner. It probably did have the advantage of not being a box. It was finished to a high standard.

Hughie wins the $100 voucher for Ubeaut products.

    Second Prize: Labr@. Jewelery Box

Then we had the boxes and this was so difficult. While this entry was relatively simple in design, it was superbly executed and we were impressed with the tools that were made to accomplish the result. The clinch was the rather attractive marquetry on the lid.

Labr@ wins a $50 voucher for Ubeaut products.

    Third prize: shanesmith80. Backgammon board

I suppose this is not strictly a box, although it is a box, but again the contestant stepped outside the comfort zone. The veneer application is quite critical and this, albeit with some initial teething troubles, came out in the wash very well.

shanesmith wins a copy of "A Polishers Handbook" (5th edition).

Finally, again a big thank you to everybody that took part as without you all there could be no winners as such.

    Regards
    Paul

PS: The judging panel excused BobL from his judging duties following the tragic loss of his wife Amanda. While he is coming to terms with realities he felt he was not up to the task of judging.

The judges would also like to thank Neil for so generously donating prizes and for facilitating the process for this competition. We will also be in touch with the winners for addresses so the prizes can be forwarded.

I saw a request for pictures of the winning entries. In the first line of the post announcing the winners there is a hyperlink to the "Ready for Judging" thread and that will take interested Forum members directly to the thread where all entries were presented, but so there is no confusion, just click on the link below:
