Default Cubism competition 2022 - Chief Tiff

Well; I indicated in the main thread I was keen to enter so here I go…

My idea is still being fleshed out but in general I am going for a definite cubular shape which pretty much narrows it down to a box; jewellery, keepsake or some form of specific storage application. Last year I started experimenting with Kumiko and made a couple of ebony trivets for my daughter; I’m keen to expand on this technique and make it the key feature:

    Ok; time to start designing…

    An update;

It has taken me a while to figure out what I wanted to build; mainly because I had no real idea on what the finished product will actually be used for… however this afternoon I was doing a fair bit of measuring up of tools to see how they can be fitted into a toolchest I’m building and I realised I may have discovered a Round Tuit… I need a box for my router plane!

Nearly ten years ago I bought the Veritas large router plane with extra blades and fence and every time I pull it out I mentally remind myself to build a box for it. I’ve also added the inlay cutting attachment and the small router plane as well. It’ll be going into a till so I need to keep it quite compact; I can go up to 9” on one side and 5” in height so I’ll see what I can achieve within those limits. Currently I’m thinking of having it with a removable top tray with the spare blades French fitted into it. As for woods I have some quite nice spalted pale timber (I think it might be jacaranda), American oak, random unknown hardwoods in various shades of brown and a pile of redgum. Depending on the size of the spalted wood I might need to make it a panelled construction.

So; my cubular kumiko has been gently nudged to one side in favour of something I actually need!

Been very busy this last week before I head back to work tomorrow so I only had time to clean up two faces to look at the spalting. I also checked it against some of our timbers at my woodworking guild and I’m pretty sure now it’s actually mango.

The timber is roughly 4” wide by 1-3/4” thick (or 100mm by 44mm for the monolinguals amongst us) and the cut includes the heart in one corner so I can play around with the cutting to get both riftsawn or quartersawn; but it looks like the best figure is on the riftsawn parts of the face.

So; I’ve roughed out a layout where the top tray holds French fitted cutters and the base holds the router and a couple of accessories; now I just need to work out how to do the box. Looks like I may cut two 3/8” thick slices from the plank and bookmatch them to give me a single 8” wide piece that can be cut to wrap around the base with splined mitre joints and a single panel inserted into the lid. If I need to pad anything out I have some leftover strips of ebony I can use; in any case I was intending to use ebony for the splines as it will match the black spalting.

Anyway I’m off at work till June 2nd so plenty of contemplation time ahead of me!

Default Not much progress I’m afraid…

Despite being home for the last two weeks myriad other projects had taken precedence; resulting essentially in SFA happening on the cubular front.

Today I finally pulled out the bandsaw and started slicing up my block of mango. I was hoping to peel off a couple of 3/8” slices and bookmatch them, however the initial cut surfaces were a little disappointing…

Fortunately the spalting showing on back of the 2nd slice was MUCH prettier… so I cut a third slice and will be using those two faces instead:

And here is a bit of a close-up showing the lovely …erm… mouldy rot?

And I’m back at work for another two-week hitch tomorrow…

The last three months have seen practically zero progress; I've had a bit of a upheaval at work that needs me to defer many of my rostered days off until November and too many other projects took up what little “me” time I was left with … I’ll end up with a cool 7 weeks off but as they don’t start until November they’re not going to help much here…

I did at least finish making a toolchest to reduce the number of horizontal surfaces in the shed buried under tools… and it’s already proved a massive help as I no longer need to keep going in and out of the shed to grab tools quite as much:

    IMG_0417.jpg IMG_0418.jpg

But very little on the box front.....

I did start to flesh out the design and came across a stumbling block; I need the box sides below the lid to be 4" tall but my mango when dressed only comes to 3-3/4"... but fear not; I have a cunning plan....

To match the black spalting I am going to add a strip of ebonised timber along the top and bottom edges of the box; this will stretch out the timber sides to the height I need. The lid panel will have a quartered design with a central ebonised square to keep with the theme and I intend to use mitre joints on the sides with black reinforcing splines. Before I left for work on Wednesday I left a lump of 0000 steel wool sitting in vinegar so that should be ready on my return, and the edging will be red gum which contains enough tannins to stain my fingers black every time I work with it...

So here are a couple more picks showing the boards for the sides and the strips of red gum I'll be ebonising; and hiding at the back is my donkey's ear shooting board I also had to make for the project.

Default Have to pull out I’m afraid…

It is with deep sadness and a touch of shame that I am forced to announce my formal withdrawal from the competition.

For several months now I have had very little time to myself at home with ongoing renovations etc. and I don’t see any improvement on this until next year at the earliest.

I’ve been very impressed so far with the offerings of the other competitors and I wish you all the best of luck; I’m very envious of your achievements!

Sorry to hear that Chief, but we understand that the trials and tribulations of life tend to get in the way of such things. Thank you for letting us know.

I don't know about the bribes but you certainly need to refund the entry fee .

Chief, it is sad but at least you will have a project ready to go on with when you get some shed time.
    Cheers, Bob the labrat
