Cklett,
You can't just show us a photo of your home made shooting plane in post #25 and not give us an explanatory post. How about starting another thread about it? It looks great. Please show and tell more!

Current status. Still 3 box bodies to go. Started preping the material for the lids.

OK, not far off from panic mode, but I still have hope to finish just in time. Might be a finish like on these reality cooking and home improvement shows..... [emoji57]
Anyway, working on the last dovetails and started preparing for the lids and hardware.
I wanted to do the connectors small, but now I am going to make them big and prominent. I will use this weird yellow wood for that.
That reminded me of one of the competition rules. It has to be at least 80% wood. Still not sure if by volume or weight.
I did some preliminary numbers.
In terms of weight I will have around 15% metal in this project.
In terms of volume it'll be be only 0.6% metal, 44% wood and 55.4% air in a 250mm cube. I guess I am still within regulation.

Don't worry about the air - nobody will see it
.
Now you need to stop worrying and get back to work - time is running out and I really want to see yours finished.Cheers, Bob the labrat

Ok, OK. Steady on.
Glued up already 2 of the boxes and Glued in two ledges to reinforce where the big hinges go and provide enough meat for rounding over the back edge. I need to do that to provide enough clearance for the boxes to rotate around each other. Same time the ledge will be support for the lid.
Might not make much sense, but you will see.
I am applying now a cascaded workflow. While the glue dries on these, I work on the other ones.

Quick update.
Finally sorted out all details. How to fix the lids and the connection of the boxes. All works well.

All dovetailing done and boxes glued up.
Hope to have all the lids done by Friday.
I have reverted back to resaw on the table saw for time reasons.
But planing to thickness has to be done by hand. I found I get best consistent results to first flatten one side. Then cut a rebate on both long edges to the desired thickness. I mark them with a sharpie and then plane down the material in between. I am staying away from the sharpie as long as possible. I use the sharpie so I can see easily if I go too far.

Looking good CK.
I had to look up the meaning of that saying after translating it - at first I thought you were telling us that you're going nuts.

After work today I decided to go on and cut the recesses for the connector plates.
I marked them out and drilled the majority out with a 32mm forstner. One of my dovetailing practise pieces was used as backing to prevent breakout at the edges.
A washer served as primitive depth gauge. Any further fine tuning can be done with the router plane later if needed.
The round edges of the recess then gave a good guide for plaining down the edge of the box to a massive round corner. That is needed so the boxes can rotate around each other freely.
Finally the edges of the revess needs to be squared towards the box edges with some careful chisel work.
That whole process needs to be done 32 times...

Sorry guys. There was in the end not enough time for me to finish this. I also wanted to do it properly and for that I need more time. This is the current status.
As you can see still quite a lot to do. Especially a lot of detail work.
Well that's life and unfortunately it was also life that didn't allow me to put enough time in. I will still finish it as my time allows and report on it here.
Meanwhile I wish all finalists good luck. Some great work has been done and the judges will have a hard time.

Commisserations CK. It's sad to miss the entry date but as you say it's important to do it properly. It is looking very good at this stage so the effort so far has been worthwhile.
I will keep following this thread with interest.Cheers, Bob the labrat

CK
Thank you for letting us know and it is a disappointment that you are unable to complete the project as you have devoted so much effort.
Before you withdrew formally, the judges had already decided to award the second interim prize to you and despite your formal withdrawl decided to honour your contributions:

We would also echo Labr@'s sentiment that we still look forward seeing the finished project.
