Thanks so much guys! The support in the forum is really great.
I will keep at it. I feel I still need to earn that pen and I will keep posting updates.

Hey CK, now that the silly season is well behind us do you think you will get back to this project? I would like to see it in the completed condition but will fully understand if your enthusiasm for it has faded too far.
Cheers, Bob the labrat

Hi,
No my enthusiasm has not dropped off, but it has been put on hold by the silly season, big birthdays and family vacation. However, now where they are finally back at school and things are settling back in I want to get back into it.
Based on the last picture I posted I actually made some progress. All lids are now fitted and all brass brackets are roughly ground to shape.
It is now a lot of detail work. I will post again soon.

Current progress.
I worked the time I had on the brass hinge brackets.
I first cut some lengths from bar stock and drilled equidistant holes.
Then I clamped a bunch together and rough rounded the ends on a belt sander.
I thought I took a picture of that but cannot find it any more. Anyway, I also thought I can shape them good enough that way, but it was not good.
So I had to make a jig for my bench sander. With this jig I can make very reproducible rounds.
And I have such situation often. Therefore I thought it is worthwhile making one. With the screw at the back I can adjust the diameter of the round. Willalso help me to make wooden thumbscrews, etc.
Then I had to go and put chamfer into the screw holes. I used a recently restored pole drill for that.
With a very sophisticated depth indicator [emoji3]
But works...
Put the first 4 boxes together to test.
So far so good. Still needs the other 4 and then tuning the connections.

It's alive....
It turns and twists, just like the toy. My kids already had a play with it.
After I had it all together, I still needed to make some round overs. Otherwise it wouldn't fold properly.
This little guy made it a breeze. You can see from the tarnish of the brass sides, that it is basically living on my bench. Fits perfect in my hand and is used a lot.
The next time you'll find see the box is when it is all smoothed, polished and finished.
....and I have a little extra in my mind. Hope it works out.
