Default Cubism Competition 2022 - CKlett

OK, it starts. My project is inspired by this little toy of my kids and in shape quite fitting to the challenge [emoji3]

There will be some twists and hopefully smart features. We'll see. However, it will most likely involve quite some prototyping and jig building. I'll work it out as I go.

OK, I thought I had it in the right spot. And it seems somebody has already moved it?

At least it looks to me it is now where it should be or did I misunderstand?

I made a little progress in my planning.

The toy my kids have is called an infinity cube. And since they got this fidget toy, I was thinking making one from wood.

However, just replicating that wouldn't be enough for this challenge.

So firstly I will make it bigger. I will make it so it just fits into the 250 cube category with each individual cube about 120mm side length.

Secondly, each cube will have lids, so you can put stuff inside. Depending how you turn the cubes, different ones become accessible. I will decide later on how to configure the insides. Whether it becomes an elaborate jewellery box or keepsake box...

Third, the joinery will be hand cut dovetails with wood hinges for the lids.

I had to figure out how the infinity cubes are designed. I could not find any plans. I had to reverse engineer it. I cut some dummy cubes and laid them out next to the kids one. I could then mark along which edges the hinges are and then which faces would become lids with an X.

After that I sorted the cubes to see how many different types I need. It turned out that there are only two different types. Means I have to make 2 x 4 identical cubes.

Next step will be making one cube as prototype from some scraps. This will then tell me more what to look out for and how to construct the individual cubes.

I have not forgotten the competition. But before I continue I have to put this baby together...

Yeah; I saw the parts and fretted that I wouldn't be able to cope with not knowing which direction your project was turning...

OK, I was thinking how to respond to your punts, bit noting turned up on my mind I could cope with....

Any way a bit of explanation. My project will need a lot of dovetails and I did not have a coping saw with blades thin enough to match the kerf of my favourite dovetail saw made by IanW.

So I organised some Gramercy blades, but they are too long for my other saw frames. Hence I had to make one myself and luckily the same IanW had suitable bits and pieces in his scrap bins. I wonder what more treasures are hiding there...

But anyway I made some progress and have now a working bow saw.

Still a bit rough and ergonomically unfriendly. But it works great. Another weekend and it should be coming out nicely shaped. Hopefully.....

Last week was particularly sh...y. I needed a sense of achievement. What best for that then getting something else done.

At least I can now use the blades thin enough to match my dovetail saw kerf.

I will have to make 8 boxes of same size. I want to dovetail them. At the end I should be good at cutting through dovetails by hand. At least that's my hope [emoji6]

Here is a little sketch of how each box is designed.

To make marking the dovetails up easier I made this template.

With this I can now layout the tails fast and hopefully get them all the same within tolerances. I just need to put the template against the edge of the board and mark the tails.

Then just square the lines across

and finished marking and ready for cutting them out.

Now I need to start preparing the stock. That will be another challenge hand tool style.

    Cklett,
I may possibly award you an extra 0.01(Ps that’s a metric point)of point, due to your coffee mug, I like that.

In that case I might hide a mug in every post with pics. Maybe over time I collect enough extra points to get me over the line that way [emoji6]
