    Default Cubism Competition 2022 - Doug3030

    Alright - I'm in.

    Right now I have no idea what I am going to do, but I suppose I need a purpose in life.

    I'm sure an idea will come to me.
    I got sick of sitting around doing nothing - so I took up meditation.

    Start on anything - if it morphs around a bit it doesn't matter as long as you keep photos of progress and eventually post them along with a bit of a blurb. You can even make the morph part of the story.

    Back in April when I started this thread, I had every intention of submitting a project. Life didn't go that way, so at this point I have decided that in the interests of reducing stress, it is in my best interests to withdraw from the challenge.

    The background to this has been a combination of things.

    Firstly I was diagnosed with cancer. I was fortunate that it was discovered early by a lucky accident and has now been treated and I am ok and not in any danger. The cancer was a small lump on my right kidney which was discovered during an ultrasound of my liver. I was experiencing no symptoms and was lucky the Ultrasound technician was on the ball otherwise I would still be unaware it was there.

    A full diagnosis was made after an MRI and a biopsy. The treatment for this type of cancer is keyhole surgery, no Chemo or radiation needed. As my doctor described it "If you had to get a cancer and you could pick the one you got, you would have picked this one." Even so, recovery from the surgery, nearly three weeks ago is taking it's time. Keyhole surgery is probably a lot better than being opened up fully, (something I have never experienced) but it can still leave you with a lot of ongoing pain while healing, which I do know about.

    At the suggestion of the surgeon, I lost about 30 kg of weight to make the operation go easier so my general health and fitness has probably improved. In fact, I was feeling great going in to the surgery so it was a bit disappointing to be feeling rather second-hand during the recovery stage. But I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

    While I am looking down that tunnel at the light that is my future I can see a lot of things that I have put off over the past six months in the leadup to the surgery and I need to prioritize things. Some things have definite deadlines, others could be put off but some of them, particularly when it comes to family take on a higher importance than a woodworking challenge.

    I ask the organizers and participants for their understanding in my decision to withdraw from this challenge to allow me to recover and concentrate on the things that matter most in my life. I am slowly getting back into the shed and working on projects but it is not in my best interests to be chasing down deadlines right now.

    Hopefully, it will not be long before the next challenge is announced and I will be in a position to participate.

    Hey Doug;

    It’s a pity you’ve had to pull out but quite rightly you need to put your health first.

    I look forwards to joining you again on the next challenge!
