Default Boat restoration - Red Lead paint

    Hi All,

I was given this boat and motor by Neighbour. The motor is a 5hp tohatsu(1962/63) model. I can't find much on it on the net and I have never seen one anywhere before. The local tohatsu dealer didn't have a clue on it either.

As for the boat, I have no idea what it is. It has nice lines and a small "V" bottom.

My question is, now that I have started to strip it back, do I need to remove the red lead if i'm going to paint it again. I have been using Dumond smartstrip, low VOC, low odour stripper, which works really well. I was thinking of taking the top coats off and leaving the red lead on. Fill in any imperfections/Holes/Dents etc with epoxy(Wests). Fair and repaint. Or should I strip it right back to bare, coat it with epoxy and then paint over the top

What paint should I use. Is quality house paint ok these days or do i need to use a dedicated marine paint.

    Hi mc

Tohatsu outboards are very well regarded here in W.A. by professional fishermen (estuary ones with lower powered outboards) with good reason - reliable.

Re painting, I used normal good quality house paint for 14+ years on moored yachts (above the waterline) on both planked and plywood hulls with no problem. Mind you, that was back in the dark ages of the 1970's when oil based house paints were readily available. The Chemist of a local paint company wich made both marine and house labelled paints told me that house paint and marine paint were identical - the only difference being price [marine labelled cost lots more] and added sales tax [since morphed into GST on everything].

    Good luck with your restoration.

    Default Marine paints

Norglass is an Australian paint manufacturer who make really good high quality paints and varnishes. They are generally available from Home Hardware stores.

Have a look at their web site for more information and a list of stockists.

I have been using their single pack Polyurethane varnish on the boat that I am restoring and can say that I'm very impressed with the gloss levels and the ease of application.
    Cheers
    Peter.

Don't use epoxy on the boat, unless just repairing small dents, dings and divots. In other words no wholesale coating of areas.

Lead the red lead in place as best as you can. House paint does work and porch and deck paints seem to be the toughest. Oils work on wood better than acrylics, but acrylics are better at resisting mold, mildew, etc. which can be a real problem under side decks, inside lockers and cabins.

    Hi All,

Thanks for the replies. I will check out Norglass this weekend.

What is a suitable undercoat/primer to use once I have fixed and faired the hull. Also should I sheath the bottom with fibreglass once painted to protect it.

    Cheers

    Michael.

You can sheath the hull if you want, but I wouldn't.

Use a high build epoxy primer (under coater), such as the stuff from System Three. I think BoteCoat has something similar.
