Building an Acorn 12
A friend is building an Iain Oughtred Acorn 12 dinghy at the Living Boat Trust shed at Franklin in Tasmania and I thought a few progress photos were in order.
There's a page at the LBT website covering the build or the latest photos of her build can be seen here.
I'd much rather be down there learning these skills than stuck in Sydney
Geoff

Build progress
Latest pictures added.
Build is progressing well and they hope to have it in the water for the Derwent Valley Autumn Festival on April 18th.
Biggest problem currently faced is what colours to paint it?Geoff

Well the Acorn isn't going to be ready for the Derwent Valley festival so it's going to be launched on the 1st May.
It's now part of the Daggy Dinghy day previously promoted hereGeoff

I wish it were me making it!
The builder informed me this morning that it's just an undercoat in the photos and the blue tint is mostly due to the crappy phone camera used to take the shot.
Actual colour will be off white.Geoff

Very similar build as the Auk. I wish I had seen some of these photos 12 months ago. I still have not worked out what bright work I will have on "Ripplejumper" yet, but I really like the look of the acorn. Does anyone know what timber the transom is made of ?

Well the Acorn is finally finished and was launched on schedule during the Living Boat Trust's Daggy Dinghy Day held at Franklin Tasmania on the 1st May.
Here's a picture of the boat building crew and the results of their labours. More pictures here.
It seems that boat building, like woodworking in general, is an addiction! The owner of the boat (Ros) is already looking around for the next one to build.Geoff

Thanks for posting Geoff great result and I'll bet the crew had an enormous amount of fun not to mention education.

Hi Geoff, I have saved the acorn pictuers under "motavation". That king billy pine is good stuff I have just spent a hour or so varnishing the aft cabin hatch and and house off the big boat, I think I have more bits of Wavedancer scattered around the back yard than actualy on the mooring. What was the Acorn named ?
As an ex Tasweigen these posts about boats being built down south make me even more home sick

No name for the acorn as yet. I think the builder's daughter gets that honour.
There's still some work to be done before the project is finished.
The design of the oars is still be finalised before a pair is built. Spars, mast etc will be made next along with the keel board (if that's the correct term)
Having followed the build from the start, I would much rather be down in Tassie learning these skills that stuck in Sydney troubleshooting computers.
One day perhaps...Geoff

The feedback I've gotten from the owner/builder tells me she really enjoyed the whole process. Although she's been involved with the Living Boat Trust for a number of years, this is her first construction project.. Not bad for someone with very little woodworking experience.
The next boat is already in planning stageGeoff
