Default Building a dinghy - WIP

THought I would have a go a building a small dinghy to play about in Lakes Entrance and Warrnambool at my in laws and my parents when we go visiting

I will endeavour to do a WIP - but be aware. I dont neccessarily know what I am doing or how to do it properly.

Have cut and made building frame and forms, transom and cut laminations for the stem.

But a bit of a knowledge test first:

Can anyone guess the design based on the photos attached? Might try a hint a day if I remember until someone snags it.

Not planning to paint it in solaguard if anyone was wondering, however I was hoping I have made the correct choice in ordering some Botecote Epox-e-glue for all gluing of laminations fot stem as well as plywood laps (there is the first clue by mistake). Would appreciate thoughts on this, thinking that the thicker paste type mix would be less messy than a runnier mix like botecote epoxy.

    Gday,
Just went out to my boat shed, turned upside down on the floor to have a gander-(reminder) of what my beautiful little clinker Clausen looked like when I rebuilt her keel and floor.....got really giddy......so have now recovered my sense of balance, grabbed a beer........and reckon your hull line is very similar......nice lines.....stable beam and soft/dry ride!
All the best......p.s. paid $500 for her on trailer with genuine Zeta wheels .......and had spent $5500 and 10 months on her (excluding the motor) when I first took her fishing......worth every cent!
All the best.....from very fossilised fisherman.

Iain Oughtred from Duck Flat? No Idea which design though.
That Epox e Glue seems to be pretty good - I am on my second batch. But I may revert to normal thickened Bote Coat for glueing the laps, I am a bit sus about the strength characteristics, havent asked Bote Cote but!
I just noticed the cross-spalls on your moulds - seem to be on different sides at the front there. You've got the mould on the right side of the stations havent you?

    ANdrew,
    Yep Oughtred design, model anyone?

You may have me second guessing but the cross spall (assuming they are the timbers that attach moulds to building frame) on that front mould got changed from vertical to horizontal as it was very flexy when attached. THe mould is in the right position though. I marked those and followed them pretty carefully, and then rechecked. There is a note on plans that I read about 10 times to be sure about, which is moulds forward of centre are on the forward side of station, behind the centre they st on the aft side.

    Excuse terminology, new to this.

Olbassy, photo for the benefit of all who wish to look? Mine might perhaps be a little smaller than yours without seeing it - Mine is between 8 and 12 foot long (cant give too much away in case anyone is too interested in still guessing design).

Bryan, I think I'm right in saying that unless you are going to bevel the moulds you should have the forward ones on aft side of station and aft ones forward of station. If you draw a plan (or go out the boat and bend a batten around moulds - the moulds should be closest to the centre of boat from station ) view of mould and hull side you'll see what I mean. You only want the hull side touching at the point of the mould on the station line. Hope this makes sense. I'd hate for you to make a mistake before you go any further. Easy to fix now. I'll stop now before I confuse myself.

If it was under 8' my guess would be an Auk. Just happen to have one in the shed.

You are right Andrew, I think I crossed the description up. But I Definitely did it right out in the shed, was a couple of weeks ago.

Ian, I have seen your auk build on here, looks very nice.

Giving it away here, but think a little bigger - small fat bird with funny looking beak.

There is a beautifully built example on these forums somewhere called Miss Mouse I think.

Had to google it - Looks like a cross between a Pigeon and a Chook.

Pretty close though. Starts with the same letter

I' m not really up on Iain's latest boat model names, he seems to update them every now and again but I'll try for Puffin.
    Any more pics?

I have dry fitted the keelson but found that I had to put a severe amount of pressure down at the transom to get it to bend to the fitting location. It took all my body weight of 75Kg to get there and I also had to tie down the keelson at the middle as it lifts about 4 inches when I bend it.

This seems like a lot of pressure, and once glued if I release the middle tie down to be able to fair for the planks I am sure it will lift up to that 4 inch height above the molds.

I could use shipping strap, I guess to tie keelson down and plank over the strapping cutting it off flush after turnover, but I am a little worried.

Also I am concerned that when it is all planked and the moulds are removed it will spring back and cause destruction.

I can also laminate 2 x 10mm thick pieces but would Like to avoid this as it will be a waste of timber as plank is 20mm thick now I would have to thickness down and cut another piece.

Alternatively I could place cuts across the inner face of the keelson to relieve pressure but this will weaken the timber and look a bit ugly from inside the boat when finished

I will post some photos if I can remember tonight - Keelson is 20mm thick spotted gum.

    Any thoughts appreciated.
