Use a "Polysulfide" instead of a polyurethane for the lap sealant. 3M-101 is one of the few available. BoatLIFE 1033 and BoatLIFE 1034, are polysulfides, Joinsil 222 is another often found in aquarium stores. Make sure it says polysulfide and doesn't have the word silicone anywhere in the product description.

I haven't been too successful in tracking down polysulfide (or polysulphide) in Australia. Does anyone have any hints?

There are two types of polysulfides - a single part, usually in a tube or caulk gun cartridge and a two part. The two part stuff is what is commonly used to seal the caulk lines on a traditional deck. It's not easy to work with, but is a superior product.
I'm not sure of what's all available there, but I've heard good things about "FixSeal+", which should be available at most marine stores (like Binks).

Yes, PAR's on the right course. I use Fixseal and am about to try Sikaflex 291 available from Bunnings and Mitre10.
