Ummmm.... BOLLOCKS !!!

I'm currently agonising between Houdini, Navigator & Walkabout, and Ross's First
Mate, Phoenix III & Periwinkle. (will probably build OzPDR & maybe a Eureka,
stalling the decision..) Just because JW's boats can be more difficult, & the plans
less well.... "audited" than some others, doesn't make them bad boats.

Incidentally, do you make guitars? Sort-of thinking something with a 1980's Maton
sound. But which rewards a clumsy git with a range of 'voices' depending on where
the strings are plucked/struck.

A holder attached to the gunwale of a boat that holds the oar in place and acts as a fulcrum

Sorry, but I only do violins, violas, cellos and double basses. The guitar family have a different tradition, techniques and ethos...I built a mould once to make an acoustic in the early '90's, but got to the point fairly quickly where I had to decide on some sort of cut off point for the work I undertake, and if it has frets it was easier to say I don't make it or fix it...
Hope you find a good instrument. If you are thoughtful enough to know the type of voicing you want, then you are good enough to deserve to have it in my book.

Mike, the Pearl thing is a long story. I really wanted the second boat to be special, but sometimes we sit around dreaming up reasons not to do things that really appeal to us because they don't seem quite right. Truth is sometimes the everyday thing (that's right under your nose) can be more special than the 'classic'. (IMHO)
Welsford has hit on a winning combo that ticks so many boxes, but most of all it is useable, attractive and it makes people happy. And I've learnt that sailing is a joy, but it needn't be too complicated.

I'm not against doing a thread, I just didn't think there'd be much interest, given that so many have already been built.

Ah that's good. Rob there may have been many built but I don't think there are too many on this forum. Besides the design is not so important as the techniques and problem solving that I find interesting.

Plus you will have a multitude of cyber assistants offering advice and encouragement.

well, I'm not fastidious (always in too much of a hurry for that), but I think I'm a reasonable problem solver and lateral thinker...and you can have a good laugh when I get into strife

I lean towards Walkabout rather than Nav, although a lot more water would be open
to Nav in a wider range of weather.

SWMBO leans towards something by Windsor or Jayco.
I did counter-propose Bolger's Watervan, but the idea wasn't enthusiastically received.

Can't start much of anything at the moment.
Got $20K or so of retaining wall to fix.
So that we can rebuild the pergola.
Some time after that, I may get a shed big enough to hold a larger project.
(although I do have this cunning plan to enlarge the pergola while we're about it...)


Oh, & voice is all I can get out of a guitar - haven't the co-ordination to play any
technical stuff, so I milk (some would say 'wring') out of it what I can with a vague
understanding of harmonics & resonance. A friend today suggested I take my
old Takamine to a guitar mechanic to see if some of the higher harmonics can be
tweaked out of it. It's not a bad guitar - it's just that with hearing aids I can hear
it properly now. And the feed-back triggered on some high notes is annoying...

Yep although I have been warned not to try and put any boat stuff out there. But darling I say I've run out of building room.... bad luck she says.

I suppose that's one advantage of not having any building space to run out of...
not much leverage for arguments aout taking over 'living space'.
However, I notice there's a new leak in the alsynite directly above my chipboard
ex- kitchen cupboard door build table. *sigh*

So no Nav or nuffink else for a while..
Which is probably just as well the way Rob flies through builds. He'll be launching
by this time next year. I'd still be faffing about with frames & fittings.

I'll be interested in your build.
My nav is about 3 weeks away from launch.
It was my first real boat, and I'm interested to see how somebody with more experience tackles the build.

For a small boat there are a lot of parts to it, and its the sequence that you build those parts that can make the difference between an easy build and a hard one.
I'm pretty sure I made a lot of things harder than they should of been.

Anyway, Its good to see that you are jumping straight back into it.

Hi Mickj good to hear of your progress.

I hope you enjoy the final weeks attending to details, getting it all right, and then finally waiting for a suitable day. I found it hard in one way, because the finish line seemed to keep moving away from me, but on the other hand it is a nice time to see sub-assemblies coming together and looking useful.

If I do a thread, I'd be grateful for your input. We'll all want to hear how yours sails, too- and of course, some pics of her on the water.
