Default Deck fix on double ender

Hello there - I've not long bought an old double-ender built in the 60's. She's 40ft long and the spotty gum hull is very sound - plenty of other work to do though ! For this post I'd appreciate a point in the right direction for sealing the front deck.

It has been glassed and painted over with some abrasive thrown in. The glass on the top of the deck seems sound but it seems to be letting water in on the junction of the deck/hull and possibly around the old steel painted staunchans. I've been advised to use Vinyl ester resin and chopped strand mat to seal the edges then flowcoat the lot.

Is this the way to go ? What prep work should I do ? Will the flowcoat or vinyl ester stick to paint or does that all have to be removed ?

From a waterproofing angle - is the use of flowcoat worthwhile ?

Sorry about all the questions ! I'm just keen on getting it right.

    Thanks - Marc

The usual places decks leak are around things that penetrate the deck, fasteners and of course damage. Often, just rebedding hardware and refastening will cure a leaking deck. Ultimatly, the condision of the fabric sheathing and the rest of the deck needs to be evaluated. You do not appear to be able to preform this task yourself (no offense intended), so get a boat carpenter onto the old gal and let them have a look see at your deck issues.

I wouldn't recommend vinylester, simply because it rivals epoxy in cost, it's difficult for the novice to work with, stinks to high heaven and really isn't the best choice for a deck. Epoxy is the choice, especially for a novice.

Hey thanks Par. I'll have a bit of a trawl through the sites you've suggested as a starting point.
