Epoxy over stain

Hi chaps, Flogged the 'search' option to death, but still not exactly sure which way to go.
Became interested in R/C model boating a year or so ago after retiring, just something to 'keep me off the streets', and as is my usual want, got carried away.
Built two fibreglass boats (purchased hulls already moulded) and just added all the hardware, radio, etc.
Found it not very rewarding, and a lot of the initial challenge was lost after the second boat. These are about four feet in length and I've had both up to around the 95km mark on gps.
I am nearing the end of a wooden 48" American Thunder Boat hydroplane build that I have found to be much more fun, and extremely challenging.
The one after this (if I ever finish this one) is a 52" wood Hydroplane.
The advise I am seeking is the brand of wood stain I can use under epoxy.
I do not wish to pigment the epoxy, as I am, as my wife so graciously puts it "colour challenged".
I wish to start light and see how I like the stain in total, then darken as I see fit before sealing with epoxy.
Have researched American model boat forums, but their methods and stains all use names I have never heard of over here.
Due the complexity of the compound curves and inaccessible corners, the stain will have to be applied to the decking/sides before fixing to the hull.
I had intended to paint the one shown, so I have already epoxied it before deciding stain would have looked better.
I wish try and find a stain I can utilise on the next boat.
Any advise and/or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Fletch,
Our gracious host has a range of water based stains/dye http://www.ubeaut.com.au/dye.html have a look in the finishing forum. I've used them and with some trial and some errors a pleasing result can be achieved.

The other one to try is Feast Watson Prooftint again some trial and error is required. I have found applied straight to the wood it is difficult to work with but if mixed with shellac or what ever oil based finish you intend gives good results.

Prooftint can also be mixed with epoxy you will need to test your mix/colour first then just add as you blend the goop.

Good luck looks like fun that R/C stuff. I'm guessing you want a nice mahogany look.

The advice I was given is that alcohol and also water based stains are fine to use under epoxy.

It is also possible to get superfine pigment powder from BASF. They are metallic oxide and are the basis for many stains. It would be possible to add them direct to the epoxy.

They are metallic oxides and there is one browny colour one and one that is a black/brown. You can get the grades by mixing them.

However they will reduce the transparency of the epoxy slightly.

if you can't get a small enough quantity from BASF then ask them if they know of someone who retails their products in smaller quantities.

Silica will be stronger by a fair margin, but if you're concerned about color, add a little wood flour to the mix. It doesn't take much to make a huge difference and hide the ugly silica in a fillet.
