Flying Eleven?
Hi Everyone, So I've finally stopped dreaming about other boats to build and have decided on fixing up this one. I want to do it as cheaply as possible and just get out there and sail. Sorry the pictures are backwards and not very good as I used the computer.
The sail has F 337 and a black shield on it- made by Miller & Whitworth, sydney.
The halves of the mast have delaminated. (no photo)
Some of the stringers have parted from the plywood.
The plywood is all in good condition except the deck.
The bloke I bought it from had new sails made by Gemmel and new stainless rigging. The trailer was new and I paid $600 for the lot so i got the boat for free. I have oars & a paddle also.
My thoughts are to sand under the stringers and the seat and squirt some epoxy in there and strap it up. I will unscrew all the rigging on the mast and glue it together with epoxy.
A lot of the varnish is coming off and the last bloke painted it black.
How should I get the paint off? Also missing is the lower pintle.
What I like about it is it seems to come from an era where the boat had to do many tasks. It has oarlocks and the transom is braced to take a small outboard. i want it to sail and go fishing with the kids.
I don't want to pull it all apart- just the minimum.
Unless of course someone says "Don't touch it- that's Iain Murray's first boat! I'll give ya a million bucks for it!'
Thanks.
ps it measures exactly 11' bow to transom so i am assuming it's a Flying 11, but i got on the Flying 11 site and it seems they were cold molded and this one certainly isn't!
Any ideas as to what it is?Last edited by Jazzman; 16th October 2011 at 10:19 PM. Reason: add ps

Carefully remove the fore deck, use it as a pattern to make a new one,.
Stringers, yes clean up underneath , add epoxy glue( system3 is very good), and using a brace from the opposite side of the hull , push and brace back into contact with the hull,.
I would sand the entire hull back to bare timber and sheath in glass , if it has not been done at initial build.
This will enable you to check the entire hull for any other hidden issues

Thanks Jeff, good advice, it probably isn't glassed as I don't think it's been put together with epoxy. I didn't really want to sand it all, but a lot of the varnish is just flaking off anyway and there is no epoxy underneath, so may as well get into it!
Regards,
Brad.
