    Default Glued clinker ply construction

I am just starting construction of a 16 foot glued clinker ply sailing boat

The designer Paul Fisher seem to favour the Hill construction method using temporary stringers between the moulds. However, I have previously built using the Oughtred method with no stringers and the result was very pleasing.

In comparing the two designs, the most obvious difference is that the moulds are spaced a lot further apart, so maybe more tendency for the ply planking to sag between moulds, however this is perhaps countered by 9mm ply thickness rather than 6mm in the previous build.

So, a question for the experienced clinker ply boat builders out there. If I am using 9mm ply with moulds spaced 600 to 800mm apart, do I need temporary stringers during the construction process?

I am leaning towards not using them because I know the Oughtred method works, and I am guessing that 9mm ply will be plenty stiff enough to hold a good fair curve between the moulds.

    What do you reckon?

    Cheers, Cameron.

On the highly curved areas, the 9 mm plywood will set fair, but on the flatter portions of the hull, the ply will tend to sag between station molds. This is why the stringer method is employed in a lot of builds. This said, there are a lot of ways to skin a cat or in this case plank a boat. The ultimate test will be to erect the station molds and rip a 100 to 125 mm wide piece of plywood and lay it on the building jig. Check for fairness and compare it to a moderately light batten. This will quickly show any sagging, which will likely be in the bottom, after portions of the hull.

Thanks for the suggestion PAR. That would be very easy to do.

    Cheers, Cameron.
