Thread: My Green Island 15

So the wet weather has keep me from working on the boat for a few weeks but clear skies have allowed me to keep cracking on.

The centerboard case will be going in over the next few days and then I can really get on with the fit out.

Finally faired out the full and sanded. It's that point where I wish I was sanding a PDRacer and not a 15fter.

So the keel is now on and the skeg shaped. Once the skeg is fitted I'll cut the center board slot.

It's been a while since I put some pics up...I had a bit of a disaster with the keel where I had to cut a section out and replace it but I am now back on track and after attaching the skeg I have flipped the boat and started firing out the inside.

I much prefer the wood work to the epoxy and sanding...as we all do.

I'll try and keep the pics coming a little faster.

Andrew, I just found the thread. Thanks for posting the pics of your progress.

I bought the GI 15 plans 10 years ago and plan on starting my build soon. I might built it over a strongback and make a clinker hull. I know that would spell curtains for the easy build, but I think the hull would end up looking very nice.

Have you figured out the length of the stays? I found that everything else on the plans is clear as a bell, but I'm puzzled as to how to measure for the standing rigging. I've always built and sailed boats with unstayed rigs, so this is new territory for me.

Building on a strong back sounds like an interesting idea. It would certainly make it easier to get your frame spacing correct and straight. This was one problem I had while assembling mine. Unfortunately I did everything on my own so getting the frames to stay put while I pulled the sides in and get everything square was a stressful task.

I'm assuming you are the same Dennis that has been checking out Ross Lillistone's Eve 16? She is a beautiful looking boat. I almost wish I'd seen her before I started the Green Island 15...lol. Would you keep the flat bottom or go with a hull more like the Eve?

As for the stays...I puzzled over this or some time myself when I got the plans and scoured them looking for the answer. I ended up deciding that I would just measure them once the mast was built and upright. As long as you have adjustable stay plates on the sides there is room for a little play and will be tensioned once the forestay is lashed tight to the bow. Not much of an answer I know, sorry.

I am currently filleting out the inside of my hull which is not a fun job. I love the wood work but I am not a fan of epoxy...haha. Once that's done I can epoxy the inside, put the seat tops and decking on and she's ready for paint. With any luck I'll have her on the water at Christmas.

Keep me posted on what you decide with your build. Id be very keen to see her take shape.

I would keep the flat bottom, I think. Like you, I have thought about Mike Roberts' Eve, and yes, I did bug Mr. Lillistone about that boat on his blog some time ago. I tried contacting Mr. Roberts about it earlier this year, but his website is gone, so I do not think that he is in the plans business anymore. Too bad.

I'll post a thread here when I start my build. When you figure the measurements for your stays, put a note on the forum. I would be interested in what you find.
